Overview
This fully remote Accountant role supports multiple nonprofit business partners. Work is expected to start at approximately 30 hours per week and increase to 40 hours per week within 6 months (timing may vary based on client work and organizational needs). The position is exempt.
The anticipated full-time salary range is $65,000 to $75,000 per year. Starting pay will be based on experience, qualifications, internal equity, and business needs.
Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate accounting records for assigned nonprofit business partners in accordance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, client requirements, and organization policies.
- Process and review accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash activity, payroll-related entries, journal entries, and general ledger activity.
- Prepare reconciliations, account analyses, and supporting schedules; investigate variances and resolve or escalate issues appropriately.
- Support month-end and year-end close, including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, financial schedules, and related documentation.
- Prepare or support financial reports, budget-to-actual analyses, grant reports, and other client-facing or internal financial information.
- Maintain grant, fund, donor, vendor, customer, and program accounting records, including documentation related to restrictions and grant requirements.
- Review financial activity for accuracy, completeness, and reasonableness; communicate accounting, internal control, or compliance concerns appropriately.
- Support audits, tax filings, Form 1099 reporting, and other compliance activities with organized, audit-ready documentation.
- Coordinate work with assigned bookkeepers by reviewing accuracy and completeness, resolving questions, and delivering timely client work.
- Improve and document processes, support automation, and assist with new business partner onboarding and accounting-system transitions.
- Maintain organized electronic files and manage deadlines across multiple business partners in a remote environment.
Requirements
Required
- Prior experience performing accounting work for multiple clients, organizations, entities, departments, or comparable workstreams.
- Education, training, or equivalent experience sufficient to perform Accountant-level responsibilities accurately and independently.
- Ability to prepare reconciliations, support month-end close, review accounting documentation, and identify or resolve routine discrepancies.
- Working knowledge of accounting software, Microsoft Office, email, and cloud-based file systems, with the ability to learn new platforms.
- Strong attention to detail, organization, follow-through, time management, and clear professional communication.
- Ability to work independently, adapt to changing priorities, protect confidential information, and ask timely questions when guidance is needed.
Preferred (Not required)
- A degree in accounting, finance, business, or a related field and at least one year of relevant accounting or bookkeeping experience.
- Nonprofit accounting experience, including exposure to restricted funds, grant tracking, donor records, or program-based reporting.
A CPA license is not required.
