Overview
This role supports the build-out and ownership of the Accounting function for a growth-stage, remote-first organization. You will report to the Head of Finance and be responsible for the end-to-end integrity of the company’s books as the accounting function scales from an early-stage setup toward a fully in-house model.
This is a 0-to-1 position: you will not inherit a mature, fully documented accounting operation. Instead, you will take existing processes (including outsourced bookkeeping today), address current live issues, and establish the controls, documentation, and systems needed for reliable month-end close and audit readiness.
Responsibilities
- Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close
- Direct the current outsourced bookkeeping relationship in the near term
- Work toward bringing close, bookkeeping, and AP execution in-house over time
- Prepare and ensure GAAP-compliant financial statements
- Analyze balance sheet and P&L movements and investigate variances before they reach leadership
- Own accounts receivable (AR) and collections
- Invoicing, payment application, aging, and direct customer follow-up
- Address meaningful past-due AR as an active part of the role
- Own accounts payable (AP) oversight and vendor management
- Approval workflows and vendor account hygiene
- Manage complex accounting topics, including:
- ASC 606 revenue recognition for subscription and services revenue
- Contract modifications and billing structures
- Own core finance systems and integration roadmap, including:
- GL/AR/AP: Campfire
- Equity: Carta
- Billing/payment stack
- Build and maintain accounting processes, approval workflows, documentation, and internal controls suitable for a growing SaaS company
- Review customer and vendor contracts for accounting, billing, and revenue recognition implications
- Translate negotiated terms into correct accounting treatment
- Own equity administration
- Option grant processing, cap table accuracy, and coordination with legal and the cap table system
- Support treasury activities
- Cash positioning, inter-account transfers, and forecasting cash needs alongside the Head of Finance
- Coordinate tax and compliance activities with external tax and legal advisors
- Including multi-state filings and notices
- Partner with People Ops on payroll accounting, compensation changes, and compliance alongside a PEO
- Prepare monthly reporting packages for the lender and investors
- Build audit readiness
- Establish documentation and controls that support external auditor questions the first time they arise
Requirements
- Prior experience as a Controller, or as a strong Assistant Controller / Accounting Manager ready to run the function independently
- Experience building or materially maturing an accounting function (understanding 0-to-1 needs: process, controls, and documentation)
- Deep knowledge of U.S. GAAP, including ASC 606 revenue recognition for subscription and services revenue
- Ability to reason through nonstandard revenue scenarios
- AI-forward working style
- Use AI tools daily to accelerate close, reconciliations, and reporting
- Point of view on where automation belongs in accounting workflows
- Ability to own the close independently
- Run the process without relying on a controller above you to catch mistakes
- Ability to operate as a business partner
- Interpret contracts and operational decisions for accounting and cash implications
- Clear and direct communication
- Explain judgment calls to non-finance executives and defend decisions if challenged
- Self-directed, comfortable working with ambiguity in a remote, async, high-autonomy environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Campfire, or a comparable modern GL (e.g., Ramp, Rippling, NetSuite)
- Experience building an accounting function from the ground up in a startup
- Experience in a hybrid subscription + services revenue model
- Experience insourcing an accounting function that previously relied on outsourced bookkeeping
