Overview
An organization specializing in mental health and educational services is seeking a Billing Specialist. The organization partners with local school districts to provide therapeutic and behavioral interventions for children and families, primarily funded through Medi-Cal. The role supports the financial integrity of multiple programs by managing billing and reimbursement processes.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and submit insurance claims, invoices, and related documentation, including coding diagnoses and procedure codes
- Monitor claims for timely submission and resolve billing inaccuracies
- Verify client eligibility and insurance benefits
- Collaborate with funders and insurers to address billing errors
- Communicate eligibility changes to program and quality assurance staff
- Bill and collect copays and deductibles where applicable
- Upload payment files and generate reports from electronic health records (EHR)
- Review and manage billing denials and resubmit claims as needed
- Coordinate with program staff on documentation corrections
- Manage billing and payment invoices using EHR and clearinghouse systems
- Maintain documentation related to claims approvals or denials
- Reconcile payments and appeal payer errors
- Stay informed on billing codes, regulations, and payer policies
- Attend required trainings and meetings
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree, or Associate degree with 1 year of applicable experience, or High school diploma/GED with 2 years of applicable experience
- Experience in data entry, claims processing, and revenue cycle billing
- Familiarity with Medical Insurance Payors, including Medi-Cal and commercial insurance preferred
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
- Detail-oriented with ability to manage large volumes of information
- Minimum age of 21
- Compliance with TB test clearance, fingerprinting, and other state/federal requirements
Compensation & Benefits
- Starting hourly wage: $28.41 - $30.91, depending on experience
