Overview
A remote-based Controller position is available, reporting to the Chief Financial Officer. The salary range is $150,000 to $170,000, depending on location and experience.
This role involves leading the accounting function and financial close processes for a fast-growing consumer packaged goods (CPG) business. The Controller will oversee a team of three accounting professionals and work closely with the CFO to strengthen financial discipline and support growth.
Responsibilities
Financial Close & Reporting
- Manage monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting in accordance with U.S. GAAP
- Maintain integrity of financial statements and continuously improve close processes, documentation, supporting schedules, and internal controls
- Deliver monthly financial reports to the board
- Collaborate with the CFO on transitioning to departmental budgets and overhauling the reporting structure
Accounting Operations
- Maintain accounting policies and controls across departments
- Oversee inventory cost accounting, cost of goods sold accuracy, and gross margin analysis across domestic, direct-to-consumer, and international sales channels
- Maintain inventory obsolescence records
- Manage revenue recognition including customer trading terms, discounts, allowances, returns, and damaged goods
- Manage the ERP system (NetSuite), identifying opportunities for process and reporting improvements
Treasury & Credit
- Act as day-to-day contact for banking relationships, managing credit facilities and ensuring compliance with covenants and audits
- Oversee credit control function, ensuring robust processes for debtor ledger management and healthy cash flow; intervene in escalated payment issues or disputes
- Manage accounts payable function, ensuring accurate recording of expenses and accruals, timely payments, and maintaining supplier relationships
Compliance, Audit & Tax
- Coordinate with external auditors for annual financial statement reviews
- Manage sales tax compliance across all U.S. states using Avalara
Payroll & Benefits
- Oversee payroll, benefits, and 401(k) administration ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local tax and labor laws
Leadership & Collaboration
- Lead, develop, and mentor a team of three accounting professionals
- Partner with cross-functional departments to provide accounting insights supporting planning, forecasting, and decision-making
- Promote a culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement
Licensing
- Apply working knowledge of licensing from the licensee’s perspective, including accounting for advances, minimum guarantees, and royalties
- Experience with royalty audits is a plus
AI & Process Automation
- Experience implementing or working with AI to improve finance function efficiency is a plus
Requirements
- 8–10+ years of accounting experience including leadership roles
- Prior experience in the CPG sector is required, preferably with omni-channel sales experience including retailers such as Amazon
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and internal controls
- Experience managing federal and state tax filings
- Hands-on experience with ERP systems; NetSuite preferred
- Proven track record in accounting process transformation
- Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, ambiguous, high-growth environment
- Demonstrated leadership and coaching skills
- Strong change management capabilities
- Clear communication skills with ability to simplify complex financial issues
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required; active CPA license is a strong plus
