Overview
A technology company specializing in synthetic DNA-based data storage is seeking a Controller to lead its accounting and financial operations. This role involves building scalable financial systems, strengthening internal controls, and ensuring compliance and accuracy in financial reporting. The Controller will collaborate closely with executive and divisional leadership to support strategic decision-making and operational growth.
Responsibilities
- Manage day-to-day accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, revenue recognition, and month-end close.
- Prepare accurate and timely financial statements in compliance with U.S. GAAP, addressing complex areas such as revenue recognition, lease accounting, R&D expenditures and capitalization, and stock-based compensation.
- Develop and implement internal controls, accounting policies, and scalable processes.
- Oversee cash flow forecasting, budgeting, and financial planning in partnership with executive leadership.
- Lead annual audit and tax preparation processes with external auditors and advisors.
- Implement and manage accounting systems and infrastructure suitable for a growing startup.
- Support contract review, financial modeling, and cost analysis to inform business decisions.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Operations, R&D, and Sales/Business Development to monitor project costs and financial performance.
- Prepare board-level financial reporting packages and assist with investor communications as needed.
- Utilize dashboards and KPIs to communicate company performance and trends to support executive decision-making.
- Build and lead the accounting and finance function as the organization grows.
Requirements
- Minimum 8 years of progressive accounting or finance experience, including roles such as Controller, Assistant Controller, or Senior Accounting Manager.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and experience managing audits.
- Experience in a high-growth startup environment within technology, biotech, or hardware/manufacturing sectors.
- Proven ability to design and implement accounting processes and systems.
- Demonstrated skills in managing budgets, cash flow, and forward-looking financial modeling.
- Exceptional attention to detail, analytical capabilities, and financial acumen.
- Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., NetSuite or similar) and spreadsheet tools (Excel/Google Sheets).
- Ability to anticipate future needs and provide leadership in building the accounting and finance function.
- Capacity to operate both strategically and hands-on in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA certification.
- Experience with Big 4 or related audit firms.
- Knowledge of cost accounting, sales accounting, inventory management, or manufacturing accounting.
- Experience leading Single Audits and supporting federal grant compliance or government contracting is a plus.
- Familiarity with SaaS or hybrid revenue models.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $220,000 - $250,000 per year.

- Position is based in South San Francisco, CA.
