Overview
The organization is seeking a Controller to own accounting operations end to end. This role runs the monthly close, manages accounts receivable and accounts payable, processes payroll, administers cash and corporate cards/expenses, and produces the monthly reporting used by leadership and the board.
This is a fully remote position for an individual based on the East Coast of the USA.
Responsibilities
- Run the month-end close, including:
- Prepare and post journal entries
- Reconcile every balance sheet account
- Run bank reconciliations
- Maintain prepaids, accruals, and fixed assets
- Own the close calendar and ensure deadlines are met
- Accounts receivable (AR):
- Invoice customers
- Chase payment
- Maintain healthy AR aging
- Serve as the main point of contact for billing questions
- Work with sales on order-to-cash items
- Accounts payable (AP) and cash:
- Handle vendor setup
- Manage bill runs
- Address payment discrepancies
- Run the weekly disbursement process
- Maintain a rolling cash forecast and flag issues early
- Payroll:
- Process payroll
- Prepare related journal entries
- Reconcile payroll GL accounts
- Credit cards and expenses:
- Administer corporate cards and the expense platform
- Reconcile card activity
- Enforce the expense policy, including questioning charges that do not make sense
- Reporting and finance operations:
- Produce the monthly reporting pack (P&L and balance sheet variance analysis vs. budget)
- Prepare the monthly package for the external CPA
- Support annual tax filings, audit requests, and lender/investor diligence
- NetSuite ownership:
- Serve as system owner
- Keep the chart of accounts clean
- Identify processes that are being done manually that could be handled in NetSuite
- Process documentation and controls:
- Document current processes
- Improve what does not work
- Build appropriate controls for a company of this size
- Tax preparation liaison:
- Primary contact for the outside CPA firm
- Gather, organize, and deliver requested financial data, schedules, and receipts
- Budgeting and forecasting:
- Assist management with annual budgets and track financial performance variances
- Insurance and risk management:
- Manage the company’s core insurance portfolio
- Review vendor and client contracts to ensure indemnity clauses are reasonable
- Verify external contractors provide valid Certificates of Insurance (COIs) before starting work
Requirements
- 7+ years of accounting experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field
- Owned a close process end to end (not just a portion)
- Able to explain reconciliations and how issues are handled when accounts do not tie
- Fully proficient with NetSuite, including day-to-day experience
- Ability to work independently with minimal oversight (manager is five hours ahead and finance leadership is fractional)
- Strong written communication skills for explaining numbers to non-finance stakeholders
- Comfort operating as the accounting function owner in a team of one (inside a company of 35)

Location
- This person must be based on the East Coast of the USA and be looking to work remotely.
- Manager is based in London; teammates are distributed from East to West Coast, Canada, and in between.
- No expectation of regular travel beyond the annual company retreat.
