Overview
This role involves working as a Credit Risk Analyst within a payments processing environment that handles billions of dollars for millions of merchants across 175 countries. The primary focus is to investigate merchants on the payments gateway, applying established playbooks and judgment to identify credit risk before it results in financial loss, while ensuring legitimate businesses are not impeded.
Responsibilities
- Monitor trends across assigned caseloads to identify systemic risks and act promptly to prevent merchant credit risk losses.
- Assess how business model characteristics, seasonal patterns, and economic conditions influence merchant risk profiles.
- Communicate directly with merchants to address concerns, gather information, and explain decisions clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Share merchant and risk insights with cross-functional partners to inform the evolution of risk tools.
- Follow and improve team playbooks by identifying gaps or more effective methods.
- Utilize AI tools to detect threats more quickly and automate repetitive analysis tasks.
- Track emerging risk patterns and industry trends, flagging them to enhance detection rules.
- Develop deep knowledge of current and emerging credit risk threats within the domain.
- Mentor newer team members and contribute to raising the quality standards of investigations.
- Take ownership of the quality and outcomes of individual work.
Requirements
- Minimum of 1 year experience in risk analysis, underwriting, payments, e-commerce, or a related analytical role.
- Solid understanding of merchant credit risk concepts with the ability to synthesize scattered data points into a coherent analysis.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, capable of explaining complex situations in plain language.
- Comfortable working in ambiguous situations where established playbooks may not provide all answers, requiring sound judgment.
- Curiosity about various business models and their associated risk profiles.
- Working knowledge of chargeback fundamentals, including root causes, money movement, and mitigation techniques.
- Proficiency with spreadsheet software such as Google Sheets or Excel.
- Growth mindset with a willingness to receive feedback and continuously improve skills.

- Exposure to SQL or a strong interest in learning data querying and analysis.
- Experience using AI tools to accelerate analysis or automate workflows.
