Overview
This role owns how revenue is recognized, recorded, and assured across a business that blends warehousing, fulfillment, parcel, and software. Because there is no dedicated revenue accounting team today, the position will establish the function from day one—setting the technical accounting position under ASC 606 and building an assurance program that supports confidence from the CFO, auditors, and the board.
Responsibilities
Revenue accounting
- Own the monthly and quarterly revenue close, including accruals for usage-based fulfillment, storage, transportation, and parcel charges, as well as unbilled revenue.
- Own ASC 606 analysis for new and amended customer contracts (MSAs, SOWs, pricing schedules), including:
- performance obligations
- principal vs. agent considerations
- variable consideration
- contract modifications
- software vs. services allocation
- Own the revenue recognition policy, technical memos, and the revenue recognition playbook; keep documentation current as the product mix changes.
- Own reserves for customer credits (such as service and SLA credits), including estimation methodology, monthly true-ups, and support for auditors.
- Lead revenue analytics, including revenue by customer, service line, and contract; flux and trend analysis; and metrics that explain revenue movement to Finance leadership.
- Partner with Billing and Systems to ensure contract terms, rate cards, and billing data flow accurately into the general ledger.
Assurance and controls
- Design, operate, and continuously improve the revenue control environment, including:
- SOX-readiness controls
- reconciliations
- billing-to-GL tie-outs
- revenue completeness checks
- Build an assurance program that tests revenue before it reaches auditors, using data and analytics to identify billing leakage, duplicate charges, and rate-card variances.
- Serve as the primary revenue contact for external auditors, including PBC lists, walkthroughs, technical accounting positions, and remediation of findings.
- Prepare for audit, diligence, and potential IPO readiness requirements, including disclosures and footnote support.
Leadership
- Lead and scale the revenue accounting function (hands-on initially; team build-out as business needs evolve).
- Drive automation of revenue workflows, reconciliations, and flux analysis using the finance systems stack.
- Brief the CFO and Controller on revenue trends, risks, and key judgments.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance; active CPA required.
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including experience owning revenue accounting end to end and leading or building a team where needed, with Big 4 or public company experience.
- Experience with M&A integrations, including bringing acquired revenue streams, contracts, and systems into the close and supporting purchase accounting.
- Deep, hands-on command of ASC 606 for complex, multi-element contracts and usage-based or variable pricing.
- Proven experience designing and operating revenue controls in a SOX or SOX-ready environment and managing external audits.
- Strong data fluency: ability to trace a number from the contract to the invoice to the ledger; use SQL or BI tools (or manage a team that does) to test results.
- Experience with an ERP and billing stack (for example NetSuite and a usage-based billing system) and close management tools.
- Track record of working hands-on in a lean function; if a team is needed, build it and develop people, and communicate technical accounting clearly to non-accountants.
- Sound judgment, high integrity, and confidence to say “not yet” when support isn’t available.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in 3PL, logistics, supply chain, or marketplace businesses with high-volume, rate-card-driven billing.
- Experience with a combination of services and SaaS revenue streams.
- Prior involvement in an IPO, SPAC, or carve-out readiness effort.
- Familiarity with automation and AI tools for close, flux analysis, and reconciliation work.
