Overview
The Director, Strategic Finance is a high-impact leader within the Office of the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), applying an investment-oriented perspective to key strategic, financial, and enterprise-value decisions. This role personally leads complex analysis and selected cross-functional workstreams under the delegated authority of the CFO.
Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, this position expands the capacity and analytical depth of the Office of the CFO across executive decision support, capital allocation, enterprise performance, Value Creation Plan validation, Apollo and Board engagement, financing, and merger and acquisition (M&A) execution.
Responsibilities
Enterprise strategic finance, corporate modelling, and capital allocation
- Build, enhance, and apply integrated financial models, strategic scenarios, and sensitivity analyses connecting operating performance, cash flow, leverage, capital requirements, and enterprise value.
- Evaluate organic growth initiatives, capital projects, acquisitions, financing alternatives, and other uses of capital using disciplined return, risk, liquidity, and enterprise-value analysis; establish appropriate post-investment performance reviews.
- Translate complex financial, operational, and market information into clear alternatives, trade-offs, and recommendations for the CFO, CEO, and executive leadership.
Apollo, Board, and lender performance insight
- Lead financial synthesis, analytical challenge, and development of decision-useful performance narratives for selected Apollo, Board, and lender discussions (with the CFO remaining the primary relationship owner and existing teams responsible for underlying financial information).
- Integrate and constructively challenge inputs from Financial Planning & Analysis, Accounting, Data & Analytics, and operating teams to identify key drivers, emerging risks, outlook implications, and required decisions.
- Partner with the CFO and executive leadership to articulate clear financial narratives regarding business performance, strategic priorities, risks, and opportunities.
- Lead selected follow-up analyses and coordinate timely resolution of material questions, commitments, and decisions arising from Apollo, Board, and lender discussions.
M&A, financing, and strategic transaction execution
- Lead core financial analysis and selected execution workstreams for acquisitions, dispositions, refinancings, and other strategic transactions, including screening, valuation, financial modelling, due diligence, scenario analysis, and approval materials.
- Support the CFO in evaluating capital structure, liquidity requirements, financing alternatives, and capital-allocation priorities.
- Coordinate Finance workstreams, data-room requirements, and financial analysis across internal teams, financing sources, counterparties, and external advisors.
- Evaluate transaction structures, synergies, risks, integration considerations, and value-creation implications; support post-transaction performance tracking where appropriate.
Executive decision support and Office of the CFO effectiveness
- Serve as a trusted thought partner to the CFO on high-priority strategic, financial, and operational matters.
- Lead selected cross-functional strategic workstreams and high-priority analyses, applying investment discipline, structure, pace, and clear accountability to complex or ambiguous issues.
- Support the financial elements of the Value Creation Plan by connecting initiative impacts to the long-range financial model, validating material financial assumptions, and supporting the reporting cadence for key financial and operating KPIs (without assuming ownership of broader VCP governance or initiative execution).
- Institutionalize rigorous decision and review processes for priority Office of the CFO mandates, including clear accountabilities, analytical standards, and escalation protocols.
- Build trusted relationships with long-tenured leaders and ensure Strategic Finance complements existing functional teams.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, economics, accounting, mathematics, engineering, or another quantitatively rigorous discipline.
- 4 to 7 years of progressively responsible experience in private equity, investment banking, pension or infrastructure investing, strategic finance, or another analytically rigorous transaction- or investment-oriented environment.
- Demonstrated experience building and interpreting complex financial models, evaluating investments or transactions, and preparing concise decision materials for senior executives, investment committees, Boards, or equivalent senior stakeholders.
- Advanced financial modelling, valuation, investment-return analysis, scenario analysis, and business-case development skills.
- Expert-level proficiency in Microsoft Excel and the ability to create concise, executive-quality PowerPoint materials.
- Deep understanding of the connections among income statement performance, balance sheet requirements, cash flow, liquidity, leverage, covenants, and enterprise value.
- Exceptional analytical judgment and attention to detail, including the ability to identify inconsistencies, test assumptions, distinguish material issues from noise, and reconcile information from multiple sources.
- Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation communication skills, including the ability to produce concise, persuasive, executive- and Board-quality materials.
- Credibility, judgment, and executive presence to work directly with senior leaders, investors, lenders, and advisors while handling confidential information appropriately.
- Highly self-directed, organized, and action-oriented; able to manage multiple workstreams, tight deadlines, and ambiguity without requiring a large team or extensive direction.
- Hands-on orientation and willingness to move between high-level strategic questions and detailed analysis and execution.
- Strong collaboration and influencing skills, with the ability to lead cross-functional work through expertise, credibility, and delegated authority rather than formal hierarchy.
- Intellectual curiosity and interest in understanding businesses at the club, member, and operating-process levels.
