Overview
This role is responsible for the financial management and stewardship of a portfolio of grants and contracts for sponsored research and other departmental accounts, with a focus on Emergency Medicine portfolios. The position provides high levels of client satisfaction through strong relationship management, leads quality assurance initiatives, and supports development of training and best-practice resources.
Additional responsibilities include primary portfolio financial and budgetary management as well as support for secondary portfolios across multiple departments and federal and non-federal sponsors. The role also conducts complex modeling for a Principal Investigator’s (PI) portfolio to develop long- and short-term resource plans and creates and updates financial plans to meet sponsor requirements.
Work is performed under the general direction of the Research Finance Manager.
Responsibilities
- Manage financial and budgetary activities for a designated client portfolio, including guidance and oversight for budgeting, financial planning, and financial reporting.
- Maintain expertise in university budgeting processes and procedures, including federal and sponsor-specific requirements.
- Conduct complex strategic modeling across a PI’s complete portfolio of grants to support long- and short-term resource planning.
- Create and update financial plan(s) reflecting strategic direction, programmatic priorities, and all other requirements.
- Adjust processes, reporting, and analysis to accommodate sponsor-specific requirements.
- Build and maintain strong working partnerships and communications with faculty, PIs, OSP, and department administrators.
- Mitigate risks associated with sponsor non-compliance by identifying deficiencies in fund management.
- Develop and implement process and system changes to prevent or eliminate risk.
- Identify and address internal control issues as they arise, including responsibilities related to effort reporting.
- Develop and implement sophisticated reporting and analytical practices and maintain sound internal controls to ensure compliance with university policies and procedures.
- Collaborate across organizational and functional boundaries to maximize support for clients, including acting as a liaison between clients and central university administrative offices.
- Stay current on laws, regulations, and internal/external policies governing grant and contract administration, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and training mandates.

Required Skills and Abilities

- Strong computer skills, with advanced knowledge of Excel, database query tools, and reporting.
Preferred Skills and Abilities
- Experience with Yale Workday financial applications, Yale Budget Tool, IRES PD, and PowerBI.
- Knowledge of federal regulations and reporting requirements (e.g., OMB Uniform Guidance, NSF’s PAPPG, NIH GPS).
- Prior sponsored award/research administration experience in an academic setting.
- Knowledge of university policies and procedures governing sponsored project management.
- Project management training and experience with a strategic approach to managing multiple projects.
- Familiarity with sponsors such as DOE, DOD, ONR, NASA, and national labs.
Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, business or finance, plus four years of related work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

- Salary Range: $68,000.00 - $120,500.00
