Overview
The Fixed Asset and Lease Accountant will manage accounting and financial reporting for fixed assets and leases, including preparation of external (U.S. GAAP and statutory accounting principles) and internal reports, financial statement disclosures, regulatory and audit support. This role is integral to the monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting close process and collaborates with various internal departments such as Finance, Facilities, and Operations. The position requires knowledge of relevant fixed asset and lease-related GAAP (FASB ASC 320 and 842) and SAP (Statement of Statutory Accounting Principles No. 22).
Responsibilities
Level I
- Gather and analyze financial data to prepare journal entries, account reconciliations, tax schedules, and financial schedules ensuring audit compliance.
- Maintain fixed asset register and subledger, including additions, disposals, transfers, retirements, and monthly depreciation/amortization calculations.
- Review and capitalize assets per company policies.
- Support physical asset inventories and reconcile with book records.
- Track construction in progress and support timely asset placement with proper documentation.
- Coordinate with procurement, IT, real estate services, and operations on asset and lease matters.
- Maintain lease schedules, including right-of-use assets and lease liabilities for GAAP and statutory treatment; initiate monthly lease payments.
- Review contracts to identify embedded leases and determine appropriate accounting treatment.
- Update lease modifications, reassessments, and renewals.
- Ensure accuracy and completeness of lease data within lease accounting systems.
- Research technical accounting and financial reporting issues and document analyses.
- Maintain and enhance control environment consistent with NAIC Model Audit Rule and corporate policies.
- Stay current on accounting developments through seminars, workshops, and independent study.
- Support finance and enterprise-wide projects and initiatives.
- Establish and maintain constructive relationships with internal and external professionals.
- Adhere to corporate code of conduct and privacy policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Level II (in addition to Level I)
- Handle more complex technical accounting and financial reporting issues under general supervision.
- Provide enhanced support to finance and enterprise projects.
Level III (in addition to Level II)
- Work independently on complex technical accounting and financial reporting issues.
- Lead implementation of new accounting standards and projects.
- Provide consultative expertise to management on financial concerns.
Requirements
All Levels
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field; or six (6) years of relevant experience in lieu of degree.
- One (1) year of related experience preferred.
- CPA or advanced degree preferred.
- Public accounting and/or fixed asset and lease experience preferred.
- Understanding of financial statements and GAAP; SAP knowledge preferred.
- Experience with Workday, Lease Query, and related systems preferred.
- Ability to interpret and apply changes in accounting guidance.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills across organizational levels.
- Initiative and continuous improvement mindset.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
Level II (in addition to Level I)
- Two (2) years of related experience.
- Demonstrated understanding of fixed assets, leases, and related accounting.
- Strong communication skills and ability to handle complex priorities.
- Broader knowledge of accounting principles.
Level III (in addition to Level II)
- Five (5) years of related experience.
- Advanced understanding of GAAP and SAP.
- Comprehensive knowledge of fixed asset and lease accounting and financial reporting.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage complex, competing priorities.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to travel within the Health Plan service region for meetings and trainings as needed.
- Ability to work in a home office for extended periods for business continuity.
Compensation & Benefits
- Grade E1: $62,400 - $84,000
- Grade E3: $62,400 - $106,929
- Grade E5: $71,880 - $129,384
Actual salary will vary based on budget, experience, knowledge, skills, education, and internal equity. The salary range is one component of the total rewards package, which may include group health and dental insurance, retirement plan, wellness program, paid time off, and paid holidays.
