Overview
This role is for the first dedicated tax accountant hire within the organization’s MindLedger service software. You will partner directly with the founders and the Product and Engineering teams to translate deep Australian tax and compliance expertise into the rules, context, and quality standards that AI agents follow.
The position combines hands-on tax practice with product building: you will deliver tax services to the organization’s customer base while helping develop the service software. Every return you prepare, review, or correct will improve the product.
As a founding hire, you will shape quality standards, professional processes, and help build the future accounting team.
Responsibilities
Agentic Product Development
- Build AI agents with the engineering team, working hands-on with Product and Engineering (not just writing requirements).
- Review agentic self-improving edits by verifying whether proposed changes are technically correct and best practice.
- Audit what the agents produce by checking completed workpapers back to source and determining whether work is review-ready or needs to be sent back.
- Identify why work failed (e.g., incorrect instructions, incorrect source data, or a judgement call the agent could not reliably make) and apply the appropriate fix.
- Test and validate new capabilities against messy, unusual, and half-documented client situations.
Tax Services & Quality Assurance
- Deliver tax services to the customer base, including preparing and reviewing tax returns, BAS, working papers, and financial statements as the product is built and validated.
- Serve as the registered tax agent, taking professional responsibility for sign-off and lodgement of client work.
- Own the final quality-assurance and sign-off framework for agent-produced work—determine what leaves the building.
- Ensure work meets Australian professional and regulatory standards, including ATO requirements, professional obligations, and applicable accounting standards.
Domain Leadership
- Act as the authority on Australian tax and compliance across the organization.
- Stay current on legislative, ATO, and accounting-standard changes, and update agent rules and product behaviour accordingly.
- Help the organization learn how different accounting firms operate (ledgers, workpapers, review processes, lodgement cycles) so the product fits real practice.
- Provide a credible practitioner voice when engaging with accounting firm customers.
Requirements
Qualifications & Experience
- CA or CPA qualified (essential).
- Registered tax agent with the Tax Practitioners Board, or clearly eligible for registration (desirable).
- 5+ years in Australian public practice across business services and tax.
- If you have less than 5 years experience but are ambitious and willing to learn, the organization encourages you to apply.
- Experience preparing and reviewing:
- individual, company, trust and partnership returns
- BAS/IAS, working papers, and financial statements
- Proven experience reviewing others’ work and maintaining quality.
Technical Knowledge
- Strong command of Australian tax law, including income tax, GST, FBT, Division 7A, CGT concessions, and trust distributions.
- Proficiency with Xero, MYOB and/or QBO, and familiarity with the ATO portals.
- Solid grounding in special purpose and general purpose financial reporting for SMEs.
Product & AI Aptitude
- Interest in AI and willingness to help change how compliance work gets done (no prior AI product experience required).
- Ability to unpack judgement into explicit, teachable rules and standards.
- Comfort with ambiguity, iteration, and fast feedback loops in an early-stage product team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Registered tax agent with the Tax Practitioners Board, or clearly eligible for registration.
