Overview
This role supports the organization’s National Tax Group. The employer is seeking a highly motivated, analytical, and experienced tax controversy professional to join a new National Tax team and report to the Head of Tax Controversy and Risk.
As a Tax Controversy Manager, you will assist clients in responding to IRS and state tax matters to resolve issues as favorably as possible.
Responsibilities
- Represent clients in IRS and other authorities’ tax controversy matters, including interactions with clients, engagement team members, and IRS/state personnel
- Research complex federal and state tax topics and draft and/or review technical memoranda and tax alerts
- Ensure timely handling and identification of technical topics for training tax team members
- Assist client teams with complex transactions to identify risk areas prior to transactions being executed
- Assist clients and engagement teams in identifying potential risk areas
- Support internal and external presentations
- Serve as a tax technical resource to the Tax practice
- Assist in reviewing and enhancing tax policies and procedures to enhance quality and reduce risk
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- CPA, EA, JD, or LLM preferred
- IRS or tax controversy experience desirable
- 6+ years of broad, relevant experience in tax compliance, tax accounting, or tax consulting
- Strong technical skills in tax concepts and rules
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team with guidance, in an environment of deadlines and concurrent projects
- Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and various tax research tools
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA, EA, JD, or LLM
- IRS or tax controversy experience
