Overview

This role supports the R&D Credit Services Team within the organization’s National Tax practice. The position is remote; job duties do not need to be performed within proximity of an office location. However, remote employees may be required to be present at an office with scheduled notice for client work, team meetings, or trainings.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary point of contact and project manager for R&D credit studies and related activities, ensuring engagements are conducted in accordance with practice standards, completed on time, and within budget, including conducting fieldwork and supporting client deliverables
  • Demonstrate expert time management and prioritization skills, including completing work in a timely manner and avoiding PTO/personal time during critical times of year
  • Demonstrate expert project management skills by keeping projects progressing, updating stakeholders, and managing stakeholder expectations
  • Develop and assist in executing work plans to identify and quantify research credit claims (including scope, fees, deliverables, timing, etc.)
  • Explain complex tax technical matters in simple terms to firm and client personnel
  • Assist team members with engagement delivery as needed, including legal research and writing regarding technical issues
  • Lead overall engagement review, including technical review of calculations, work papers, and deliverables
  • Provide proactive project updates to stakeholders to manage expectations
  • Suggest efficiency improvements related to process and engagement management
  • Provide coaching, training, and professional development to staff on a regular basis
  • Manage project budgets and engagement economics, and perform other job-related duties as necessary

Requirements

  • 5+ years’ industry experience required, with 1–2 years in a managerial capacity
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • Licensed CPA, J.D./LL.M.
  • Solid verbal and written communications skills, including the ability to evaluate and articulate complex information via email, phone, and video
  • Detailed understanding of federal and state rules, regulations, and relevant court cases
  • Mastery of topics including: controlled groups, changes in ownership, funded research, utilization, Payroll Tax Credit, short periods, and entity conversions
  • Strong understanding of entity types and how the credit flows to its point of utilization
  • Ability to work in a deadline-driven environment and handle multiple projects simultaneously, both with a team and independently
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with firm and client personnel and interact successfully with professionals at all levels
  • Ability to read and study relevant tax material related to R&D credit rules
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access, and ability to use the internet

Compensation & Benefits

  • In Illinois, the salary range for a National Tax Manager is $120,000 to $170,000
