Overview
A growing data analytics company based in Pittsburgh, PA, is seeking a Payroll & Benefits Accountant to join their Finance team. This part-time, fully remote role involves managing payroll processing, payroll tax compliance, and employee benefit accounting. The position requires 15–25 hours per week and regular interaction with employees.
Responsibilities
- Lead bi-weekly payroll processing submissions to the payroll processor accurately.
- Maintain employee records including new hires, terminations, salary changes, and tax elections.
- Review and verify timesheets; resolve discrepancies with managers.
- Serve as the primary contact for employee inquiries regarding paystubs, taxes, and timesheets.
- Maintain confidentiality of sensitive payroll and employee information.
- Review payroll tax filings prepared by the payroll processor for accuracy.
- Manage state payroll tax accounts, including filings, payments, and agency correspondence to ensure compliance.
- Complete payroll-related submissions such as 401(k) contributions and HSA submissions.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal payroll regulations.
- Update archives to properly maintain payroll, tax, and benefit records.
- Support employee onboarding and offboarding activities related to HR systems.
- Administer benefit programs by utilizing carrier websites and reconciling payroll and vendor invoices; collaborate with HR to resolve discrepancies.
- Manage the Concur expense platform, reviewing and processing employee expense reports and coordinating reimbursements through payroll.
- Forecast future payroll cash requirements based on hiring projections.
- Support monthly accounting close and reporting by updating vacation accruals, payroll liabilities, and other financial reports.
- Lead year-end payroll activities such as W-2 preparation.
- Complete special accounting and HR projects as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience managing payroll and payroll taxes for small companies.
- Exceptional attention to detail and ability to support fast-paced growth and Finance team priorities.
- Advanced Excel skills, including pivot tables and lookup formulas.
- Strong customer service orientation to effectively support internal Finance customers.
- Demonstrated ability to learn new software applications.
- Self-motivated and comfortable working independently with general direction.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
