Overview
A global shared micromobility business is seeking a Payroll Manager for North America to lead and design the strategic direction of payroll operations across the United States and Canada. This role involves managing multi-state and multi-provincial payroll complexities, ensuring accurate, compliant, and employee-focused payroll delivery. The position requires hands-on coordination between payroll systems, HR data, and financial reporting.
This is a remote position requiring residency in the United States to facilitate effective collaboration. Occasional travel is required to support business operations.
Responsibilities
- Oversee and design the strategic framework for payroll operations, ensuring accurate and timely payroll processing across federal, state, and provincial jurisdictions in the US and Canada.
- Conduct rigorous reviews and validate payroll runs, deductions, tax withholdings, and benefits contributions before and after processing.
- Develop scalable payroll delivery models to support a growing employee population.
- Serve as the subject matter expert and owner of the payroll vendor platform (currently ADP), managing configuration, audits, tax filings, and issue resolution.
- Manage relationships with external payroll providers to ensure service level agreement adherence and data integrity.
- Lead potential future vendor transitions as business needs evolve.
- Collaborate with People Solutions and Corporate Technology teams to ensure accurate payroll data flow across systems for employee lifecycle events.
- Investigate and resolve discrepancies between payroll platforms, HRIS, and financial systems.
- Work closely with Finance on payroll reconciliations, accruals, journal entries, and variance analysis.
- Own payroll reconciliations and resolve issues related to variances, tax withholdings, deductions, and garnishments.
- Collaborate with Finance to design SOX-aligned controls, audits, and compliance reporting including W-2s, T4s, and year-end filings.
- Act as the primary escalation point for tax notices, audits, employee inquiries, and regulatory changes.
- Identify and implement process improvements through automation, standardization, and enhanced documentation.
- Partner with teams and vendors to optimize workflows and strengthen controls.
- Lead, mentor, and develop a distributed payroll team across international time zones.
- Foster collaboration, accountability, and consistent payroll standards within the team.
- Establish standard operating procedures, documentation, and scalable workflows.
- Identify automation and process improvement opportunities to enhance accuracy and employee experience.
Requirements
- Minimum 7 years of payroll experience with hands-on ownership of complex payroll operations.
- Experience managing payroll through third-party providers such as ADP and integrations with HR systems like Workday.
- Strong knowledge of payroll compliance, controls, audits, and tax reporting for multi-state payroll including W-2 and T4 forms.
- Experience working in a scaling, public company or SOX-controlled environment.
- Excellent cross-functional collaboration skills with a strong focus on accuracy, ownership, and employee experience.
- Willingness to engage with team members in European and Asia time zones, including occasional evening calls and international travel.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or a related field.
Compensation & Benefits
- Base salary range: $108,000 - $149,000, determined by location, skills, and experience.
