Overview
This Payroll Manager role oversees daily multi-state payroll operations for a large organization and ensures accurate, timely payroll processing. The position partners closely with Human Resources and Finance to maintain data integrity, reconcile payroll transactions, and support organizational goals. Compliance with applicable local, state, federal, and international tax laws and wage regulations is essential. The role also manages payroll systems and vendors and helps translate organizational priorities into reliable payroll operations.
Compensation Range: Hourly $40.00 - $50.00
Responsibilities
- Supervise, mentor, and support payroll staff through training, guidance, and performance feedback.
- Manage end-to-end payroll processing, ensuring accurate and timely preparation of weekly, biweekly, and monthly payrolls.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local payroll regulations, including oversight of W-2 preparation and year-end tax reporting.
- Administer payroll systems (e.g., Workday, ADP, OSV), audit payroll cycles, and verify uploads to the general ledger.
- Research, analyze, and resolve payroll discrepancies, audit findings, and budget variances.
- Review payroll reports, respond to third-party payroll inquiries, and assist with worker’s compensation audits.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support operational initiatives and organizational objectives.
- Maintain a collaborative, inclusive team environment while managing deadlines and shifting priorities.
- Build effective relationships and gain alignment with peers, functional partners, and/or external partners to accomplish business objectives.

Supervisory Responsibilities
- Hire, train, mentor, and develop payroll staff members.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field required.
- Six (6) or more years of multi-state payroll experience in a high-volume environment required.
- Four (4) or more years of supervisory experience preferred.
- Equivalent combination of education or experience may be accepted.
- Experience with Workday required.
- Experience with One Source Virtual (OSV) preferred.
- Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) or Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) preferred.
Preferred Qualifications / Competencies
- Strong knowledge of payroll processing and accounting principles in a high-volume organization.
- Solid understanding of payroll regulations, tax requirements, and labor laws.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook) and payroll systems such as Workday, ADP, and OSV.
- Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a team environment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a focus on process improvement and operational efficiency.
- Demonstrated ability to influence, build effective relationships, and gain alignment with internal and external partners.
- Working knowledge of principles and practices of accounting and payroll processing and their impact on the general ledger within a large volume organization.
- Basic knowledge of mandates and other regulations related to payroll processing and labor law, preferred.
Compensation & Benefits
- Hourly rate: $40.00 - $50.00.
- Offers will be made at an hourly rate commensurate with experience, qualifications, skills, and competencies, with the minimum set based on the minimum exemption threshold based on state of residency.
