Overview
A premier outsourced finance, accounting, and HR firm focused on supporting funded, high-growth startups and early-stage businesses in the tech and consumer product sectors is seeking a Payroll Operations Manager. This role involves leading and overseeing end-to-end payroll operations for the firm and its clients, ensuring accurate, compliant, and timely payroll processing while improving systems, controls, and reporting.
Responsibilities
- Manage full-cycle U.S. and international payroll processing across multiple clients, including international payrolls managed through Employer of Record (EOR) providers
- Act as the internal payroll subject matter expert, collaborating closely with HR and Accounting/Finance client leads
- Administer payroll platforms such as Gusto, Justworks, Rippling, ADP, TriNet, Deel, or similar systems
- Ensure accurate processing of wages, bonuses, commissions, and deductions
- Oversee multi-state payroll compliance, tax filings, and year-end reporting (W-2s, 1099s)
- Reconcile payroll reports, benefit invoices, and payroll-related general ledger accounts
- Partner with accounting teams to support month-end close activities, including payroll accruals and related reporting
- Support payroll-related equity compensation processing, including tax withholding and reporting for employee stock programs
- Manage payroll setup and termination processing for new hires and departing employees, including prorated pay, final pay, and payroll deductions
- Coordinate payroll-related benefits deductions and ensure accurate employee and employer contribution processing for medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) plans
- Maintain payroll procedures, internal controls, and implement process improvements to support scalable payroll operations
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years of U.S. payroll experience, including multi-state payroll
- Strong knowledge of payroll taxes, wage laws, and compliance requirements
- Experience with payroll systems such as Gusto, Justworks, Rippling, Deel, Sequoia One, or similar
- Advanced Excel skills including lookups, pivots, data validation, and reconciliation workflows
- Proven experience with payroll reconciliations and audit support
- Experience supporting payroll operations across multiple clients, entities, or business units
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Experience managing international payrolls through EOR platforms such as Deel or Remote
- Excellent organizational and client communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting high-growth startups or venture-backed companies
- Background in outsourced accounting, HR, or professional services environments
- Familiarity with international payroll and EOR platforms
- Experience supporting equity compensation payroll events
- Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) certification is a plus
Compensation & Benefits
- Target salary range: $105,000 – $125,000, depending on experience, location, and qualifications
Location
- This is a full-time, remote position reporting to the Director of HR.
