Overview
This is a remote position available only to candidates residing in North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Texas, or Arizona. Preference will be given to applicants living within a commutable driving distance to the Raleigh, NC office.
The role involves performing accounting and payroll tasks to support the payroll function. Responsibilities include preparing, filing, and monitoring payroll tax returns to ensure compliance and accuracy, as well as supporting initiatives across the organization to manage and report financial information appropriately.
Responsibilities
- Support tax activities within the payroll function, ensuring correct reporting of withholdings, timely filing of tax returns, and accuracy of tax provider results.
- Assist with year-end close activities and W-2 preparation.
- Address tax-related inquiries from associates and regulatory agencies; manage relationships with tax vendors.
- Source, compile, and interpret data; analyze data to validate output and ensure pay standards are met.
- Assist with data testing in the HR Management System.
- Ensure payroll functions comply with all federal, state, and local tax regulations; engage external legal counsel and management as needed.
- Resolve compliance matters and communicate results to relevant tax authorities.
- Support HR and organizational initiatives, including mergers and acquisitions.
- Assist in the development and maintenance of audit tools, perform internal audits, and prepare materials for internal auditors to ensure proper management of tax and accounting information for projects.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree with 3 years of experience in Payroll and either Tax or Accounting, OR High School Diploma or GED with 7 years of experience in Payroll and either Tax or Accounting.
- Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC) or Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) certification.
- Understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Knowledge of Human Resources information and payroll systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in payroll tax and accounting within a bank or financial institution.
- Experience with reconciling, journal entries, and balancing transactions.
- Experience with Peoplesoft system preferred.
- Knowledge of UKG software or similar systems.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills with effective judgment and critical thinking.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with minimal supervision.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively in a team environment.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Adaptable and flexible to support changes in regulatory environments.
