Overview
This role supports revenue operations as an embedded deal desk resource for an enterprise SaaS business within the life insurance technology space. The position serves as the accounting seat at the deal desk—participating in commercial decisions before contracts are signed.
This is an individual contributor role reporting to the Controller and working as a peer alongside the Revenue Accounting Manager.
Responsibilities
Deal Desk & Pre-Deal Contract Review
- Own the accounting seat in the deal desk, including reviewing MSAs, order forms, SOWs, and amendments before execution for revenue recognition implications.
- Identify and escalate ASC 606 issues in active deals, including:
- Multi-element arrangements
- Performance obligation identification
- Standalone selling price (SSP) allocation
- Variable consideration
- Contract modifications
- Non-standard cancellation and refund provisions
- SLA credits
- Principal vs. agent questions
- Advise Sales, Legal, and Strategic Finance on deal structure in real time, surfacing accounting risk early and proposing structures that meet commercial goals without creating downstream complexity.
- Build deal review workflows from scratch, including approval thresholds for non-standard terms, deal checklists, and documentation standards.
- Translate accounting requirements into commercial language and support deal progression in a solution-oriented way.
Contract-to-Cash Intake & Operational Bridge
- Own the handoff from executed contracts to the accounting and billing system setup, ensuring contract terms are accurately translated into billing configurations and subscription structures.
- Partner with Sales Operations on CRM/CPQ and billing system accuracy.
- Manage operational workflow for contract amendments, renewals, and upsells, ensuring changes are reflected accurately and on time across systems.
- Build and maintain contract intake processes and documentation standards to support a clean, accurate handoff for revenue accounting close and billing operations.
Strategic Partnership
- Act as the primary accounting partner to Sales, Sales Operations, Strategic Finance, and Legal, embedded in commercial decision-making.
- Partner with the Sales Operations Manager to align on deal structure, pricing mechanics, and quote-to-cash operational handoffs.
- Support the Controller and Revenue Accounting Manager with revenue recognition context on complex deals during close and audit.
- Support Strategic Finance with SaaS business metrics implications.
- Contribute to commercial governance policies, non-standard terms guidance, and cross-functional training as deal volume and complexity grow.
Requirements
- CPA with 6+ years of accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a deal desk, contract review, or revenue operations accounting capacity at a SaaS company.
- Strong ability to identify accounting issues and structure deals around them (not necessarily limited to purely technical accounting work).
- Hands-on deal desk experience reviewing contracts in flight and advising Sales during negotiations; able to explain accounting positions clearly to non-accountants under time pressure.
- Builder mindset with experience designing processes (e.g., deal review playbooks, intake workflows, approval matrices) where best practices must be introduced rather than inherited.
- Working understanding of SaaS business metrics (ARR, NRR, bookings, renewals) and how deal structure and contract terms affect them.
- Proficiency with usage-based and hybrid billing models, including SSP allocation, principal vs. agent analysis, variable consideration, contract modifications, and multi-element arrangement accounting.
- Operationally minded and able to close gaps between Sales and Accounting independently without direct reports.
- Commercial instincts for how B2B SaaS enterprise deals are structured and where revenue recognition complexity may appear.
- Solution-oriented, collaborative approach with Sales, Sales Operations, and Finance.
- Demonstrated history of using AI and automation in financial operations; comfortable working with AI tools day-to-day.
- Public accounting background (Big 4 or mid-tier) and SaaS industry experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with CPQ/CRM tools and billing systems (e.g., Salesforce, NetSuite) strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with Tableau and BigQuery is a plus.
