Overview

A global professional services organization specializing in energy, chemicals, and resources is seeking a Sales and Use Tax Manager. This role is based in Houston, TX, with flexibility for remote work if not located in Houston. The Sales and Use Tax Manager will report to the Senior Tax Manager and collaborate closely with the US tax group.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the subject matter expert for US sales and use tax on multi-billion-dollar projects.
  • Advise project personnel on sales and use tax implications in coordination with the Senior Tax Manager and Tax Counsel.
  • Act as the primary contact for external clients regarding sales and use tax issues related to projects.
  • Assist with taxability determinations for accounts payable and accounts receivable transactions.
  • Conduct sales and use tax research as needed.
  • Gather data and assist in responding to state notices and assessment inquiries.
  • Download and review system reports to support monthly sales and use tax filings.
  • Coordinate sales and use tax filings and payments with internal stakeholders and ensure billable taxes are invoiced to clients.
  • Perform sales and use tax accruals, evaluate unreconciled balances, and assist with resolution.
  • Manage exemption certificate processes and assist with vendor tax disputes.
  • Support sales and use tax audits by gathering relevant data such as general ledger details, invoices, and purchase orders.
  • Extract queries and reports from ERP systems.
  • Notify Project Finance and Project Accountants of discrepancies for accurate reporting.
  • Compile and maintain shipping and delivery information.
  • Ensure proper setup of new projects and communicate relevant information to the Tax Team.

Requirements

Experience and Technical Skills

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in US sales and use tax, including managing US sales and use tax audits.
  • Knowledge of sales and use taxation in the engineering and construction industry is a plus.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and analytical skills.
  • Self-motivated with a strong work ethic; able to work independently, multitask, and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Working knowledge of Oracle, ERM, Power BI, and Alteryx is advantageous.
  • Experience or proficiency with transaction tax calculation systems such as PinPoint, Avalara, TTR, OneSource, Sabrix, or Vertex is a plus.

  • Capable of performing senior-level analysis.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and troubleshoot complex tax issues.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field is required.
  • CPA, Master’s degree in Accounting/Taxation, or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation is preferred.
