The Senior Credit Analyst is responsible for credit and collateral risk analysis related to business lending. This position supports the Commercial Credit Manager by analyzing financial information and recommending loan structures. The role includes portfolio management, pipeline oversight, and guidance to the Sales and Collections teams. Additionally, the analyst manages Small Business Administration (SBA) lending in accordance with SBA guidelines and product offerings.

Responsibilities

  • Complete underwriting and due diligence for business loans professionally and effectively (approximately 40% of time).
  • Approve or deny business loan requests within authorized lending limits based on underwriting results.
  • Analyze financial statements, tax returns, environmental studies, appraisals, and other documents to assess business loan risks.
  • Prepare credit memorandums and recommend/manage loan covenants, collateral controls, and loan structures.
  • Evaluate appraisals, environmental assessments, construction reports/contracts, and participation agreements as needed.
  • Collaborate with external agencies providing government guarantees or third-party underwriting support.
  • Review and manage documentation related to government lending programs such as SBA loans.
  • Underwrite incoming SBA loan requests and maintain current knowledge of SBA lending practices and procedures.
  • Assist and train department staff on government lending programs.
  • Communicate clearly and accurately with management regarding federal and state regulations affecting business lending.
  • Manage the existing business loan portfolio efficiently, including timely collection of financial statements, loan renewals, and annual reviews (approximately 30% of time).
  • Monitor expiring and at-risk loans for financial deterioration and recommend risk rating adjustments.
  • Recommend corrective actions and initiate loan workout processes when necessary, with management support.
  • Provide periodic updates on portfolio management metrics and utilize loan origination system tools for tracking.
  • Participate in cross-functional teams for special projects related to core systems, policy development, training, and audits (approximately 15% of time).
  • Oversee loan documentation processes and coordinate with the Sales Team to ensure timely loan closings and renewals (approximately 10% of time).
  • Maintain accurate loan files and documentation within the Business Loan Origination System.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication and coordination with internal personnel and management (approximately 5% of time).
  • Support related departments and branches as needed.
  • Keep management informed of activities and significant issues.
  • Attend meetings and complete required reports and records.

Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in a business-related field or three years of related work experience.

Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in accounting or financial analysis.
  • Minimum of 3 years of business underwriting experience in a bank or credit union.

  • Advanced understanding of GAAP accounting, federal and state tax structures, legal entities, real estate appraisals, and environmental reviews.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to assess creditworthiness.

  • Ability to prepare clear and accurate memos, reports, and essays with proper grammar.
