Overview
A financial services organization is seeking a Tax Manager to lead tax compliance and reporting functions within the Finance department. This role reports to the Controller and involves managing partnership and corporate tax matters for multiple entities, including funds, joint ventures, and corporate subsidiaries.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary liaison with a third-party tax preparer, reviewing all federal and state tax filings (including Form 1065 and Schedules K-1) for accuracy and completeness before submission.
- Apply partnership tax expertise to review allocations, distributions, and capital account maintenance across partnership entities.
- Ensure timely and accurate delivery of K-1s to investors and employees, accompanied by clear communication.
- Manage income tax accounting under ASC 740 for two corporate entities, including current and deferred tax calculations.
- Lead adoption of ASU 2023-09 (Income Tax Disclosures), assessing impact and coordinating implementation.
- Review and respond to state tax notices across all entities, tracking open items to resolution and escalating as needed.
- Initiate federal and state estimated and extension tax payments on time, recording journal entries and maintaining documentation.
- Reconcile tax-related general ledger accounts regularly to align tax filings with accounting records.
- Communicate proactively with investors regarding K-1 availability and quarterly financial statements; handle ad hoc investor inquiries.
- Confirm accuracy of quarterly distribution calculations and supporting tax computations.
- Monitor changes in federal, state, and local tax laws; assess impacts and recommend tax planning opportunities.
- Support external auditors on tax matters during annual audits by preparing schedules and workpapers.
- Collaborate with the Controller on special projects and finance initiatives, providing tax insights.
- Continuously improve tax processes, controls, and documentation to support scalability.
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years of tax experience with significant exposure to partnership tax accounting, including review of Form 1065 and Schedules K-1 for funds, joint ventures, or similar pass-through entities.
- Active CPA license.
- Strong technical knowledge of partnership tax concepts such as capital account maintenance, allocations, and tax distributions.
- Experience with ASC 740 income tax accounting for corporate entities, including current and deferred taxes.
- Proven ability to manage third-party tax preparer relationships, critically reviewing work and ensuring quality and timeliness.
- Experience reviewing and responding to state tax notices across multiple jurisdictions.
- Excellent attention to detail and proactive problem-solving skills.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills, capable of explaining complex tax matters to investors and non-tax professionals.
- Proficiency with financial software, ERP systems, and Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel; experience with NetSuite is a plus.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fully remote, fast-paced environment.
- Public accounting experience, particularly with fund or partnership clients, is advantageous.
