Overview

This leadership role builds and leads the finance function for a growing B2B SaaS organization, while scaling business operations more broadly. The position is responsible for both finance strategy and the operational systems that support sustainable growth. Title and level depend on experience (Director or VP) and the role reports to the CEO.

Responsibilities

Financial Strategy, Planning, and Analysis

  • Own the annual budget and a rolling 12-to-18-month forecast, built with department leaders, with cost visibility so budget owners can manage their own numbers.
  • Lead scenario planning and unit economics, including CAC, LTV, magic number, gross margin by revenue stream, and sensitivity analysis behind hiring, pricing, and investment decisions.
  • Own cash and capital strategy: 13-week cash flow forecasting, working capital planning, treasury and banking relationships, runway planning, and fundraising planning.
  • Deliver the monthly leadership and board package, including balance sheet, income statement, cash flow, ARR waterfall, KPI dashboard, budget-to-actual variance, and commentary on what the numbers mean and next actions.
  • Provide investor relations support, including board materials, data room management, and diligence for financing, credit facilities, or transaction events.

ARR, Metrics, and Revenue Strategy

  • Own the monthly ARR waterfall as the single source of truth, reconciled to both the billing system and the GL.
  • Define and ensure consistency of rate metrics derived from the ARR waterfall: gross and net revenue retention, churn, downgrade, expansion, and growth rate.
  • Explain month-over-month movement at the customer level, identifying specific drivers behind expansion, downgrades, and churn.
  • Own the revenue recognition policy under ASC 606, applying the five-step model to every current and proposed revenue stream.
  • Partner with Sales and Customer Experience on deal structure and non-standard contract terms before signature so the revenue system remains clean.

Accounting Oversight and Controls

  • Oversee the full cycle close (monthly, quarterly, and annual), delivering accurate financial statements within 5 to 10 business days of month end through a team the role builds and manages.
  • Own the general ledger, chart of accounts, and close standards under U.S. GAAP, with documented policies that a reviewer can follow without the role being present.
  • Establish internal controls appropriate to the organization’s scale, including segregation of duties, approval thresholds, and expenditure authority built to scale without proportional headcount.
  • Build the people, process, and tooling needed to produce GAAP financial statements auditable under U.S. GAAS, and maintain relationships with external accountants, tax preparers, auditors, and lenders.
  • Handle technical accounting for ASC 340-40, ASC 718, and ASC 350-40 where applicable, plus ASC 740 income tax provision, deferred rollforward, and valuation allowance assessment.
  • Own Section 174 and R&D credit strategy, including multistate income tax nexus, apportionment, and SaaS revenue sourcing coordinated with external advisors.

Systems and Team Leadership

  • Own finance stack strategy across ERP, billing, payments, spend management, close management, tax compliance, payroll, fixed assets and leases, and cap table—plus integrations so data moves without manual rekeying.
  • Lead build/buy/replace decisions for finance tooling, including migrations off systems the organization has outgrown.
  • Hire, develop, and manage the finance and accounting team as the function scales.
  • Own the finance scorecard and metrics used in the company operating cadence.
  • Lead billing and subscription system strategy: quote-to-cash architecture, plan and price book design, and GL integration.

Payroll, Commissions, and Equity Oversight

  • Oversee payroll accuracy and the accounting treatment of wages, taxes, and benefits; errors are treated as a trust function.
  • Oversee sales commission and bonus plan design and ensure plans drive the right behavior, apply accurately, and are paid on schedule.
  • Oversee benefits invoicing, 401(k) administration, and the annual audit and Form 5500 filing.
  • Own cap table and equity strategy: grant structure, 409A coordination, and dilution modeling, with records supporting ASC 718 expense.

HR, Recruiting, and Legal Oversight

  • Build and manage the HR and recruiting function: hiring plans, role scoping, and a process that moves candidates from sourcing through signature.
  • Lead people operations fundamentals: onboarding, compensation structure, performance processes, and employment law compliance across states where the organization operates.
  • Manage legal affairs through outside counsel, including contract review and negotiation, employment matters, corporate governance, IP, and vendor agreements.
  • Select and manage external law firms and HR/legal advisors to ensure the right issues reach the right experts before they become expensive.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of progressive finance and accounting experience, including 2+ years leading a finance function at the Director, VP, or Head of Finance level.
  • SaaS or subscription business experience, including deferred revenue dynamics and SaaS metric strategy. Not negotiable.
  • Demonstrated ownership of the planning cycle: annual budget, rolling forecast, and board reporting, from strategy through delivery.
  • Deep fluency in ASC 606, gained by owning the framework or directing the team that built it.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and defend an ARR waterfall at the leadership or board level, including ownership of new, expansion, downgrade, and churn build-up and what it means for the plan.
  • Working command of ASC 340-40, ASC 718, ASC 350-40, and ASC 740, sufficient to direct a team and represent positions to auditors and the board.
  • Systems implementation leadership: directing selection, configuration, migration, or replacement of core finance systems.
  • Experience managing or building a finance and accounting team, including hiring key accounting roles.
  • Experience building or managing an HR/recruiting function and managing legal affairs through outside counsel.
  • Experience supporting fundraising, credit facilities, or transaction diligence.
  • Advanced Excel or Google Sheets for complex modeling, scenario analysis, and board-level presentations.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. CPA or MBA a plus.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Time at a $5M to $50M ARR company during meaningful growth in a Director or VP of Finance and Business Operations capacity.
  • B2B SaaS experience with a mix of subscription and professional services revenue.
  • Experience raising capital and/or supporting financing, credit facilities, or M&A processes.
  • Section 174 capitalization and federal or state R&D credit strategy experience in a software company.
  • Prepared a company for its first audited financial statements.
  • Experience modernizing the finance stack and/or building a finance team from the ground up.
  • Experience running HR and legal as connected functions under one operator rather than as separate specialist hires.
  • Multistate payroll and nexus exposure.
  • Experience operating inside structured business operating systems such as EOS or OKRs, including scorecard and accountability chart discipline.
  • Genuine enthusiasm for AI-native finance tooling, including clear views on where automation belongs versus where human judgment is required.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary: $150,000 to $175,000, commensurate with experience.
  • Annual performance bonus and participation in the Equity Incentive Plan.
  • Medical, dental, vision, FSA, dependent care, life and voluntary life, short- and long-term disability.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Unlimited PTO and professional development support.

Location

  • Fully remote.
