Overview
This is a fractional Financial Controller role with a builder mindset—owning finance end to end. Every booking moves money between travelers and operators, and you will ensure accurate accounting, strong controls, and data-backed decision-making.
The position starts fractional and is remote for US-based candidates, with meaningful overlap with US Pacific hours.
Responsibilities
- Own the books: close every month on schedule and deliver clear financials with a short narrative explaining what changed and why.
- Start hands-on in the ledger: work directly in the books initially, then document processes and hand day-to-day transaction work to a bookkeeping team you lead and shape.
- Plan cash: build budgets, rolling cash forecasts, and runway views; support leadership with “can we afford this?” analyses.
- Build finance controls: develop approval workflows, spend policies, and audit trails that apply to everyone, including founders.
- Ensure marketplace accounting accuracy, including revenue recognition, customer credits and refunds, and operator payables.
- Maintain compliance: own the tax and compliance calendar, including aviation excise taxes and multi-state obligations; manage an outside CPA firm.
- Serve as the finance voice in strategy: provide the numbers behind investment decisions and prepare for investor reporting as the company grows.
Requirements
- Active US CPA license (required).
- 5+ years in accounting, including owning the close at a startup or high-growth company.
- Experience building a finance function from scratch (not only maintaining one).
- Strong marketplace accounting knowledge: gross vs. net, funds held for others, refunds, and payables.
- Deep QuickBooks Online experience.
- Hands-on US tax compliance experience, including sales and use tax, multi-state payroll tax, and pass-through entities.
- Uses AI in daily work (the team uses Claude).
- Ability to explain financial variances to a non-accountant in a few sentences.
- Absolute discretion.
Preferred Qualifications
- Aviation, charter, or travel accounting experience.
- Federal excise tax experience.
- Fundraising and investor reporting experience.
- Experience leading a remote bookkeeping team.
Compensation & Benefits
- Pay depending on experience.
Location
- Remote, US-based.
- Requires meaningful overlap with US Pacific hours.
Fractional Details
- Fractional to start: more hours in the first two months while learning the business, then approximately 10 hours per week, increasing as the company grows.
