Overview
This role is for a fractional, strategy-focused CFO who enjoys building trusted relationships with business owners, teaching financial concepts clearly, and translating financial insight into action.
You will serve as the senior finance voice for a portfolio of owner-led businesses, helping develop strategy with owners rather than presenting it to them. The work includes advising and coaching clients through complex decisions, and partnering across the organization when day-to-day choices affect financial outcomes.
- Job type: Fractional (1099 independent contractor)
- Location: Remote (US based)
- Compensation: $150.00/hr
Responsibilities
- Own the client relationship as the primary finance strategic partner, building trust through a deep understanding of business challenges, strategic goals, and financial aspirations.
- Establish and maintain a regular communication rhythm, including consistent owner meetings and staying engaged between deliverables—not only during project or crisis periods.
- Act as an advisor and educator by explaining financial information in terms non-finance owners can use, and helping guide the owner through decisions.
- Adapt communication style to each client, providing either coaching toward the client’s conclusion or clear direct recommendations as appropriate.
- Engage the “whole house” by working with owners and leadership, and when relevant, with department leaders and frontline staff whose decisions impact financial results.
- Build financial models to support critical decisions, including pricing changes, contract economics, acquisition math, capital structure, and exit readiness.
- Architect reporting and metrics frameworks for each client, defining what the business should track and why, then building reporting to support it.
- Manage relationships with external parties involved in financial matters, including lenders, advisors, brokers, buy-side and sell-side contacts, and outside CPAs.
- Lead difficult conversations with clients about hard truths and financial realities while maintaining trust.
- Collaborate with the internal CFO team through shadowing meetings and weekly CEO touch-bases.
- Take on additional responsibilities and strategic initiatives as client needs evolve.
Requirements
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to teach financial concepts to owners without a finance background.
- Enjoy teaching and maintaining patience when concepts need to be explained multiple times.
- 10+ years of senior finance leadership, including CFO experience in a corporate setting.
- Prior fractional CFO experience managing multiple client relationships simultaneously.
- Comfort working with people at all levels, from owners and leadership to department leads and frontline staff.
- Direct experience with owner-led businesses under $50 million in revenue.
- Direct experience building financial models for strategic decisions.
- Experience in M&A, capital structure, or exit advisory.
- Track record managing relationships with external stakeholders such as lenders, investors, advisors, or board members.
- Experience conducting board-level financial reviews or C-suite advisory work.
- Deal structuring and financial engineering capability.
- Ability to independently develop financial strategy and present it to ownership.
- Responsive and timely communication with clients and the internal team.
- Must have a computer, stable internet connection, and professional E&O insurance.
- Must operate as a 1099 independent contractor and have their own LLC.
Compensation & Benefits
- Rate: $150.00/hr
- Flexible working arrangements as an independent contractor.
- No business development responsibilities—clients will be delegated.
- Shadowing and onboarding support to support a smooth transition.
