Overview
This role is responsible for leading the close, owning the books, and strengthening the control environment for a global, remote-first private organization with subscription and usage-based revenue.
The organization is seeking a Global Controller to lead the team currently in place and enhance core accounting fundamentals. You will manage a team of approximately 7, supporting revenue accounting, monthly and quarterly close, AP/AR, payroll, and treasury, and partner closely with Finance leadership and cross-functional stakeholders across Sales, Legal, IT, HR, and Engineering.
Responsibilities
- Lead monthly and quarterly close activities, including GL, AP/AR, payroll, and account reconciliations, delivering accurate, timely US GAAP financials.
- Current close timeline is approximately 10 business days; target reduction to 6–8 days within your first 12 months, with fewer post-close adjustments and aged reconciliations.
- Own revenue accounting and serve as technical accounting authority on subscription and usage-based revenue recognition (ASC 606), including the ARR-to-GAAP bridge:
- Reconcile ARR, billings, deferred revenue, contract assets, and usage true-ups to reported revenue.
- Explain variances to leadership and the board in clear, plain terms.
- Author technical accounting position memos for contract modifications, SSP allocation, variable consideration, and capitalized contract costs.
- Own equity compensation accounting (ASC 718), including grant accuracy, 409A timing, expense, modifications, and cap-table integrity, in partnership with stock plan administration.
- Manage and grow a team of approximately 7, with room to scale, building trust quickly and developing the leaders beneath you.
- Build and maintain a control framework appropriate for a global, remote-first private company with subscription and usage-based revenue, keeping the books audit-ready.
- Own the accounting systems roadmap and drive automation across close and reporting, including:
- NetSuite, Stripe/Metronome, Ramp, Avalara, FloQast.
- Own select treasury operations, including cash management and banking relationships.
- Partner on FX exposure monitoring given a multi-currency footprint.
- Run the external audit relationship and coordinate with external tax partners on compliance, provisions, and filings.
- Manage accounting realities for a distributed, remote-first global team, including statutory accounting coordination, payroll and contractor controls, entity reporting, and collaboration with Legal, HR, and Tax on international compliance.
Requirements
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leading a team through managers or leads.
- Big 4 (or equivalent top-tier public accounting) foundation.
- Deep US GAAP mastery, with strong expertise in subscription and usage-based revenue recognition (ASC 606).
- Demonstrated, personally-owned automation or AI deployment in accounting with a measurable outcome (e.g., eliminating a manual reconciliation, reducing close time, or lowering an error rate) that you can explain in detail.
- Experience scaling an accounting function that was already operating, not building one from zero.
- Proven track record with external audits and keeping books audit-ready.
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with credibility partnering with senior, cross-functional stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Internal controls or SOX-readiness experience.
- Remote-first/globally distributed company experience.
- M&A or deal accounting exposure.
- CPA license (active or inactive).
