Overview
The organization is seeking a Global Controller to own the close, the books, and the control environment. This is a global, remote-first role.
Responsibilities
- Lead monthly and quarterly close processes, including GL, AP/AR, payroll, and account reconciliations, delivering accurate, timely US GAAP financials.
- Improve close efficiency: current close runs ~10 business days; reduce to 6–8 days within your first 12 months, with fewer post-close adjustments and aged reconciliations.
- Own revenue accounting and serve as technical accounting authority for subscription and usage-based revenue recognition (ASC 606), including the ARR-to-GAAP bridge (reconciling ARR, billings, deferred revenue, contract assets, and usage true-ups to reported revenue) and clearly explaining deltas to leadership and the board.
- Author technical accounting position memos covering contract modifications, SSP allocation, variable consideration, and capitalized contract costs.
- Own equity compensation accounting (ASC 718): grant accuracy, 409A timing, expense, modifications, and cap-table integrity in partnership with stock plan administration.
- Manage and grow a team of approximately ~7, with room to scale; build trust quickly and develop leaders beneath you.
- Build and maintain a control framework appropriate for a global, remote-first, private company with subscription and usage-based revenue, keeping the books audit-ready.
- Own the accounting systems roadmap and drive automation across close and reporting, including NetSuite, Stripe/Metronome, Ramp, Avalara, and FloQast.
- Own select treasury operations, including cash management and banking relationships; partner on FX exposure monitoring for a multi-currency footprint.
- Run the external audit relationship and coordinate with external tax partners on compliance, provisions, and filings.
- Support distributed, remote-first global operations: statutory accounting coordination, payroll and contractor controls, entity reporting, and collaboration with Legal, HR, and Tax on international compliance.
Requirements
- 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including leading a team through managers or leads.
- Big 4 (or equivalent top-tier public accounting) foundation.
- Deep mastery of US GAAP, with strong experience in subscription and usage-based revenue recognition (ASC 606).
- Demonstrated, personally owned automation or AI deployment in accounting with a measurable result (e.g., eliminating a manual reconciliation, reducing close time, or lowering error rate) that you can describe in detail.
- Experience scaling an accounting function that was already running (not building from zero).
- Proven track record with external audits and keeping the books audit-ready.
- Strong leadership and communication skills, with credibility partnering with senior, cross-functional stakeholders.
