Overview

This senior individual contributor role owns the analytical foundation behind pricing decisions across the enterprise. The Senior Pricing Analyst is responsible for competitive price intelligence, recurring pricing analytics, and analysis and recommendations related to price architecture, promotional strategy, and markdown decisions.

The role reports into the Pricing organization and partners with Merchants, Merchandise Finance, and Marketing to develop and defend price point recommendations, evaluate promotional effectiveness, and shape markdown strategy. The Senior Analyst also sets analytical and control standards for pricing and provides technical guidance to less experienced analysts.

Responsibilities

Pricing Analytics

  • Own competitive price intelligence, including the competitive pricing data set and methodology; translate competitive position into actionable pricing recommendations for assigned categories
  • Lead price point analysis, including recommendations behind price architecture changes (margin impact, elasticity read, price gap position, and historical performance at comparable price points)
  • Evaluate promotional effectiveness by measuring incrementality and margin impact; recommend which offers to repeat, reshape, or retire
  • Own markdown analytics, including modeling markdown depth and timing scenarios; monitor sell-through and margin recovery on clearance and aged inventory and recommend corrective action
  • Build and maintain pricing scenario models that quantify the P&L impact of pricing decisions before they are made

Reporting & Data Management

  • Own the pricing reporting suite, designing, owning, and continuously improving pricing dashboards and performance reporting with consistent definitions and reliable data lineage
  • Own pricing data integrity by establishing and enforcing standards that keep pricing data complete, accurate, and consistently defined across reporting and systems
  • Drive automation to automate recurring analysis, reduce manual effort, and move toward self-service reporting
  • Lead complex ad hoc analysis by scoping, structuring, and delivering ambiguous, high-stakes analysis requested by Merchants, Finance, and executive leadership, with clear recommendations

Governance & Execution

  • Govern price change execution by owning accuracy and control of price change files; validate accurate reflection across systems and channels and resolve exceptions at root cause
  • Maintain pricing governance documentation, including an auditable record of pricing decisions, approvals, and change history
  • Serve as the pricing analytics point of contact for Merchants, Merchandise Finance, and Marketing and represent pricing in cross-functional planning forums
  • Guide junior analysts by setting methodology and QA standards for pricing analytics and reviewing work for accuracy and rigor

Success Metrics (First 12 Months)

  • Accuracy & Control: Pricing reporting and price change files delivered with no material errors, supported by documented and repeatable controls
  • Automation: Measurable reduction in manual effort across recurring pricing analytics, with cadence maintained or improved
  • Commercial Impact: Analysis and recommendations that materially changed pricing decisions in multiple categories, with quantified margin impact
  • Influence: Recognized by Merchant, Finance, and Marketing partners as the trusted analytical authority on pricing

Required Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, or a related field
  • 4–7 years of analytical experience with demonstrated depth in retail pricing, merchandising, planning, or finance
  • Advanced Excel skills, including scenario modeling, large dataset handling, and building tools others rely on
  • Proficiency in SQL, including the ability to independently source, join, and validate data across systems
  • Strong understanding of retail margin mechanics and the levers that drive gross margin performance
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including presenting recommendations to senior leadership
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently in ambiguous situations and to mentor less experienced analysts

Preferred Competencies

  • Proficiency in Power BI, Tableau, or comparable visualization tools, including dashboard design
  • Furniture, home, or big-ticket retail experience
  • Experience with pricing, promotion, or markdown optimization tools
