Overview

The organization is seeking a Director of Finance to build and own Stonehaven’s finance and accounting infrastructure from inception. This role will turn third-party bordereaux data into trustworthy financials and provide per-program economic reporting, supporting the launch of Stonehaven Specialty Insurance Company.

This position reports to the Chief Operating Officer and works closely with Stonehaven Operations and Claims on bordereaux review and approval. It also partners with the organization’s parent finance team as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Establish the chart of accounts, GL, and month-end close process aligned to the NAIC Annual Statement from inception.
  • Participate in due diligence on prospective MGA and program partners, including assessment of financial strength, premium handling and trust account practices, and the quality of bordereaux and financial reporting.
  • Review and approve incoming MGA and TPA bordereaux jointly with the Stonehaven Operations and Claims team before Shared Services posts them to the ledger.
  • Ensure data integrity for financial data flowing between Stonehaven and its MGA, TPA, and reinsurance partners, with transaction processing performed by Shared Services under this role’s oversight (GL entries, AR/AP, cash and bank reconciliations).
  • Ensure statutory (STAT) accounting and reporting are accurate, timely, and compliant with NAIC requirements.
  • Own bordereaux-driven premium and loss accounting, reconciled to cash, ledger, and cessions with support from operations and technology resources.
  • Own reinsurance accounting including ceding commissions, recoverables, funds withheld, Schedule F, and risk-transfer testing support.
  • Own fronting-fee revenue recognition and per-program economics reporting.
  • Establish capital-management practices reflecting reinsurance credit risk and the claims-pay-then-recover liquidity buffer, including maintaining the cash-flow model.
  • Support the Reserve Committee, the Audit Committee, and the ORSA process.

Requirements

  • 10+ years in P&C insurance finance/accounting, including STAT and GAAP dual-basis reporting.
  • Direct experience with reinsurance accounting (ceded premium, recoverables, Schedule F).
  • Background in Delegated Underwriting Authority programs, whether at a program administrator or on the carrier side.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA with P&C statutory accounting expertise.
  • Fronting or program-carrier finance experience where bordereaux-driven accounting is the norm.
  • Experience standing up finance infrastructure at a new or early-stage carrier.
  • Rating-agency relationship experience (AM Best BCAR submissions specifically).

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base Salary Range: $200,000 - 300,000
    • Good-faith compensation range based on what the employer reasonably expects to pay at the time of posting; actual compensation may vary based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other relevant factors.
  • Equity: Eligible to participate in the organization’s equity incentive program.
  • PTO & leave: Unlimited PTO and fully paid sick leave.
  • Remote work: Full remote flexibility and asynchronous work culture.
  • Health benefits: Medical, dental, and vision coverage, plus HSA and FSA options.
  • Other benefits: 401(k), company-paid life insurance, and disability coverage.

Location

  • Full remote flexibility.
