Accountant & Bookkeeper
Overview
A nonprofit organization dedicated to providing STEM education to underserved communities across New Jersey is seeking a volunteer Treasurer and Bookkeeper. The organization currently serves 27 schools, operates on a July 1-June 30 fiscal year, and is a 501(c)(3) entity required to file an IRS Form 990 annually. This role offers an opportunity to establish a strong financial foundation during a period of program and donor base growth.
Responsibilities
Bookkeeping & Accounting:
- Set up and maintain QuickBooks to establish the accounting foundation and track all income and expenses
- Categorize and record all inflows from various donation channels
- Categorize and record all outflows including expense reimbursements, vendor invoices, and direct payments
- Perform monthly bank reconciliations against the expense log
- Coordinate with a separate volunteer who processes expense reimbursements and check runs
Tax Compliance:
- Coordinate preparation of the annual IRS Form 990 (due November 15th)
- File stipend-related 1099 forms
- Maintain organized records to support future audits or grant applications
Requirements
- CPA, CMA, or equivalent experience strongly preferred
- Experience with nonprofit accounting, including Form 990 and fund accounting, is highly desirable
- Proficiency in QuickBooks (Online or Desktop) or similar accounting software
- Familiarity with online donation platforms is a plus
- Strong attention to detail and comfort with building financial processes from scratch
- Ability to commit through at least one full tax filing cycle (through November 2026)
