Overview

This role leads onboarding for new clients after the sale closes, owning the process that moves clients from “just signed” to books that are clean, current, and ready for long-term management. You will manage a team of onboarding accountants supporting a mix of for-profit and nonprofit clients across three verticals: State Farm agencies, independent and multi-carrier insurance agencies, and youth sports clubs.

The position is senior and requires hands-on accounting expertise, experience leading others, and the ability to manage many client onboardings at different stages without issues.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of onboarding accountants, including:
    • Assigning work
    • Reviewing output
    • Setting quality standards
    • Developing and coaching the team
  • Act as the first delivery lead for every new client after the sale closes by:
    • Setting expectations
    • Building trust from day one
  • Own and deliver retroactive accounting work, including:
    • Catch-up bookkeeping
    • Cleanup
    • Reconciliations
    • Getting books current, accurate, and complete
  • Set up new client accounts in internal systems and connect clients to the tools and processes used during onboarding
  • Manage the “change” side of onboarding by helping clients move off old providers and habits, explaining what’s changing and why, and building client comfort with the new process
  • Run a clean handoff to the ongoing CAS accountant, ensuring complete books and clear documentation
  • Coordinate with the tax team for clients onboarding for tax work by:
    • Answering initial tax questions
    • Sharing what was learned during onboarding
    • Ensuring each client has a proper introduction to their tax team
  • Track high-volume onboarding work across different stages, identify bottlenecks early, and keep timelines on track
  • Improve the onboarding process over time by:
    • Building checklists
    • Tightening workflows
    • Making onboarding faster and smoother each cycle

Requirements

  • 5+ years of accounting experience, including significant time at the Senior Accountant level or above
  • Deep experience with catch-up and cleanup work, including untangling messy or incomplete books
  • Experience with both for-profit and nonprofit accounting
  • Proven ability to manage a high volume of work across different stages simultaneously
  • Experience leading, training, or reviewing the work of other accountants
  • Strong client communication skills, including the ability to explain bookkeeping status in plain language and keep clients calm when books are messy
  • Proficiency in QuickBooks Online and/or Xero

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA or progress toward a CPA
  • Experience in a CAS, outsourced accounting, or client-facing firm environment
  • Familiarity with insurance agencies or youth sports and nonprofit organizations
  • Experience building or improving onboarding or implementation processes
  • Working knowledge of business tax, with enough insight to flag issues during cleanup that the tax team will need to know about
