Overview
The Housing Stability area within Human Services Public Health is seeking an Accounting Specialist to join the Homelessness Prevention Payments Team. This role involves processing financial assistance requests aimed at preventing evictions and supporting housing stability by ensuring payment information is submitted accurately and on time to property owners.
This is a limited duration (temporary), full-time, benefit-earning position expected to last up to one year. The position is classified internally as an Accounting Specialist.
Location and Hours
- This position is remote.
- Remote workers may be required to come on-site 0 to 12 days per year for meetings, trainings, or other reasons as deemed necessary by the supervisor. Additional days may be required for onboarding and new employee training.
- Work hours are Monday through Friday, between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.
- Candidates must live in or be willing to relocate to Minnesota.
- New Employee Orientation is in-person in downtown Minneapolis.
Responsibilities
- Review, enter, and approve payment requests in payment systems for rent assistance.
- Support batch pulls and respond to requestors to ensure timely and accurate payment processing.
- Maintain and update unreconciled checks reports, follow up on outstanding items, and upload check information into the payments database.
- Add and verify new vendors in payment systems.
- Collaborate with internal partners and update payment records when funds are returned.
- Support vendor financial and tax processes.
- Prepare payment-related reports and present payment information at relevant meetings.
- Respond to staff and partner questions regarding payments and financial workflows.
- Contact property owners regarding payments that need to be reissued or canceled.
Requirements
- One of the following:
- Three years or more of experience maintaining financial records.
- Three years or more of post-secondary education in business or accounting-related fields.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working within a human services organization or program.
- Experience using computer programs and databases such as PeopleSoft for accurate data entry.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and similar spreadsheet applications to create pivot tables and charts.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Teams, Word).
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations accurately.
- Initiative in problem-solving and sound judgment.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow complex instructions.
- Detail-oriented with effective communication skills and ability to work in a team environment.
