Overview
The organization is seeking a Controller to architect and own the accounting function and ensure the integrity of financial reporting in a fast-scaling, capital-intensive business. This is a builder-focused role: you will lead the monthly close, modernize systems and processes, convert the company to true accrual accounting, oversee a migration from QuickBooks to a modern ERP, rebuild the chart of accounts, strengthen controls, and prepare for financial statement audits.
Responsibilities
- Own the books end to end: Lead the monthly close and continuously shorten it; own revenue recognition, reconciliations, AP/AR, and payroll coordination.
- Ensure accuracy across financial statements: Maintain the integrity of all numbers that roll up to the P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow statement.
- Convert to true accrual accounting: Design and implement proper GAAP revenue recognition for a transactional, multi-location, revenue-share business so accounting reflects economic reality.
- Lead the ERP migration: Own the transition from QuickBooks to a modern ERP, including selection, implementation, data migration, integrations with payments and data infrastructure, and change management.
- Rebuild the chart of accounts: Rationalize account structure so location-level, team-level, and corporate reporting roll up cleanly.
- Connect accounting to operational data systems: Align accounting systems with rich real-time transaction data so there is one source of truth, automated wherever possible.
- Own indirect tax and compliance: Manage parking taxes, regulatory fees, and multi-jurisdiction sales/use tax compliance across a national footprint; build processes to keep operations clean as new markets launch.
- Get the organization audit-ready: Establish controls, documentation, and processes to support the first financial statement audit and subsequent audits.
- Level up the accounting team: Manage, mentor, and develop in-house accountants; set standards and build processes for a lean team.
- Partner across the business: Work with Operations, Sales, and Product to ensure billing, collections, revenue splits, and reporting are accurate at the source.
- Support reliable financial reporting: Deliver timely, accurate monthly financials and supporting schedules leadership, the board, and investors can rely on.
Requirements
- Deep technical accounting expertise: CPA (or equivalent rigor) with strong command of GAAP, especially revenue recognition for transactional or marketplace-style businesses.
- Senior accounting ownership in rapid growth: Experience as the senior-most accounting owner (e.g., Controller, Assistant Controller, Director of Accounting) at a venture-backed company during rapid scaling, with hands-on execution.
- ERP migration experience: Led a move off QuickBooks onto a modern ERP (not just observed); understands common pitfalls and how to deliver on timelines.
- Cash-to-accrual conversion experience: Took books from cash-basis or hybrid to full accrual and successfully operated through the transition.
- Audit experience: Prepared for and taken a company through financial statement audits, ideally including the first audit.
- Systems and data mindset: Comfortable partnering with data teams; design processes where the system of record performs the work rather than spreadsheets.
- Hands-on operating style: Comfortable building close checklists and directly resolving complex reconciliations in a lean team environment.
- Comfort with complexity: Experience with multi-location, multi-jurisdiction, revenue-share, or payments-heavy businesses.
- Pride in accounting craft: Motivation to build an exceptional Controller function and accounting organization.
- Bias for action: Moves quickly, addresses root causes, and focuses on practical delivery.
Preferred Qualifications
- Big Four or top regional firm foundation plus startup operating experience (either alone is viewed as a yellow flag)
- Indirect tax / sales tax / regulatory fee experience across many jurisdictions
- Experience with payment processors and marketplace money movement
- Familiarity with modern accounting tools and automation
