Overview

The Controller is a hands-on member of the accounting team responsible for the integrity of financial records, the close process, and financial controls that enable confident operations. This role works directly with the CFO to provide leadership and investors with clean, accurate, decision-ready financials.

Responsibilities

Accounting Operations & Close

  • Manage the full general ledger and the month-end and year-end close in QuickBooks Online, including journal entries, accruals, prepaids, deferrals, and intercompany activity.
  • Deliver an accurate, timely close (target 7–10 business days) with a clean reporting package for leadership and investors.
  • Own AP, AR, payroll accounting, expense management, corporate card programs, and bank reconciliations.
  • Maintain the chart of accounts and ensure GAAP-compliant policies for:
    • Revenue recognition (ASC 606)
    • Royalties and rev-share with studios
    • Capitalized software / game development costs
    • Stock-based compensation
  • Track recoupment across a large catalog of products, deliver accurate royalty statements to development partners, and ensure timely, transparent reporting on advances, rev-share, and deal-level P&L.
  • Account for complex debt instruments, including original issue discounts, exit fees, debt issuance costs, and equity-classified warrants issued in connection with borrowings; evaluate debt amendments for modification vs. extinguishment treatment.
  • Track and re-measure contingent consideration (earnout) liabilities related to acquisitions, including fair value estimates and probability-of-achievement assumptions each reporting period.
  • Apply the current expected credit losses (CECL) model to accounts receivable, including evaluating customer concentration risk and collectibility.
  • Manage foreign currency transactions and related gain/loss recognition for cross-border deals and vendor relationships.

Controls, Audit & Compliance

  • Design and maintain internal controls appropriate for the organization’s stage of growth, with an eye toward audit-readiness and future scale.
  • Support the annual audit or review process by coordinating schedules, documentation, and auditor requests in partnership with the CFO.
  • Coordinate federal, state, and local tax compliance with the CFO and outside tax advisors, including sales/use tax, multi-state nexus, and 1099 reporting.
  • Support entity setup and ongoing compliance, including maintaining state registrations and required filings as the organization expands into new jurisdictions.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual reports for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Manage lender relationships and covenant compliance reporting under the organization’s senior secured credit facility, including coordinating any required waivers or amendments.

Strategic Finance, Fundraising & M&A Support

  • Partner with the CFO and CEO on investor updates, cap table support, and the next round of fundraising.
  • Support M&A activity, including financial due diligence on potential studio acquisitions or publishing deals, quality-of-earnings preparation, and post-close integration of acquired entities.
  • Help model and review key publishing deal structures (advances, recoupment, rev-share, minimum guarantees) from an accounting and reporting standpoint.
  • Evaluate and account for acquisitions as asset acquisitions vs. business combinations under U.S. GAAP, including purchase price allocation across tangible and intangible assets and liabilities assumed.
  • Support structuring and accounting for contingent consideration, warrant issuances, and other equity/debt-linked instruments used to finance acquisitions.

Team Building

  • As the organization grows, define, recruit, and hire the first direct report.
  • Build the accounting organization over time, including evaluating systems beyond QuickBooks when scale demands it (e.g., NetSuite or similar).

Requirements

  • CPA preferred; active license in good standing.
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience, including time in public accounting and in-house at a high-growth company.
  • Series A/B experience; served as the senior accounting voice (or key contributor) at a high-growth startup at the Series A or Series B stage.
  • QuickBooks Online expertise, with experience running a clean close in QBO and knowing when and how to graduate to a larger ERP.
  • M&A expertise, including support for at least one transaction (buy-side or sell-side), financial due diligence, QoE, working capital true-ups, or post-close integration.
  • Strong technical accounting, including U.S. GAAP, ASC 606 revenue recognition, capitalized software costs, and stock-based compensation.
  • Experience with debt instrument accounting (OID, warrants, modifications, effective interest method) and asset acquisition/business combination accounting.
  • Familiarity with contingent consideration (earnout) valuation and CECL methodology for accounts receivable.
  • Builder mindset: comfortable doing the work hands-on today and hiring/mentoring/leading a team tomorrow.
  • Excellent communication skills; able to translate accounting for leadership, a board, and non-finance audiences without losing precision.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in gaming, interactive entertainment, or digital media (publisher, studio, or platform).
  • Familiarity with gaming revenue models, including in-app purchases, subscriptions, premium/paid downloads, store rev-share (Apple, Google, Steam, console platforms), and royalty/rev-share with development studios.
  • Experience implementing or migrating to a mid-market ERP (NetSuite, Sage Intacct, etc.).
  • Multi-entity or international accounting experience, including cross-border/foreign currency transactions in an operating context.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary: $130,000–$160,000, depending on experience and location.
