Overview
This role independently underwrites, analyzes, and monitors counterparty and installer risk across the partner lifecycle. Responsibilities include assessing the financial strength, creditworthiness, compliance posture, and operational performance of solar installers and other counterparties, then providing risk recommendations to support onboarding, credit decisions, and ongoing portfolio management.
The role also identifies emerging portfolio risks, enhances fraud and credit controls, and uses data, technology, and automation to improve risk management processes and operational efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Independently perform due diligence and underwriting of new and existing counterparties, primarily solar and electrical contractors and equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
- Analyze financial statements, cash flow, bank statements, credit reports, operational performance, and other financial data to assess counterparty creditworthiness.
- Recommend internal credit ratings, risk-based limits, payment terms, approval conditions, or declines; prepare written analysis supporting recommendations.
- Manage ongoing monitoring and periodic credit re-evaluations of the counterparty portfolio to identify financial deterioration, credit downgrades, fraud indicators, documentation gaps, and emerging risks.
- Analyze and report on portfolio trends, credit exposure, fraud findings, and key risk indicators; provide recommendations to senior leadership.
- Lead complex or higher-risk counterparty reviews and partner with business stakeholders to resolve escalated credit and risk issues.
- Leverage SQL, Salesforce, Excel, and other analytical tools to identify anomalies, emerging trends, and potential fraud or eligibility risks.
- Identify and implement opportunities to automate underwriting, fraud detection, eligibility reviews, and portfolio monitoring processes.
- Develop and enhance underwriting workflows, risk controls, scorecards, and monitoring processes to improve consistency, scalability, and time to decision.
- Partner with Legal, Compliance, Operations, Onboarding, and Business Development to address complex counterparty risks and incorporate regulatory requirements into risk processes.
- Support enhancements to credit, compliance, and risk policies and procedures based on regulatory changes, portfolio performance, audit findings, and emerging risks.
- Provide guidance and subject matter expertise to junior analysts and other cross-functional partners as needed.
- Maintain established SLAs for partner onboarding and ongoing risk reviews.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, Economics, Risk Management, or a related field.
- Minimum of 6 years of relevant experience in commercial underwriting, credit risk, counterparty risk, lending, financial services, or related risk management functions.
- Minimum of 3 years of hands-on commercial underwriting or counterparty risk experience.
- Direct experience in solar finance underwriting, including evaluating solar installers/dealers, reviewing financial performance, cash flow, creditworthiness, and overall counterparty risk.
- Demonstrated ability to independently evaluate complex counterparties and make credit and risk recommendations.
- Strong experience analyzing financial statements, cash flow, credit reports, and other financial information.
- Experience managing or monitoring a portfolio of commercial partners, dealers, contractors, or counterparties.
- Experience identifying fraud, financial deterioration, compliance gaps, and other emerging portfolio risks.
- Strong analytical and quantitative skills with proficiency in Excel; experience with SQL, Salesforce (SFDC), Tableau, Experian, LexisNexis, or similar tools is preferred.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present risk findings and recommendations to senior stakeholders.
- Ability to independently manage multiple priorities and complex assignments in a fast-paced environment with limited oversight.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with solar, renewable energy, solar finance, or contractor risk.
- Experience improving or automating underwriting, risk monitoring, or operational workflows.
Compensation & Benefits
In accordance with applicable pay transparency laws, the anticipated annual base salary for this position is:
- Zone 1 (Bay Area, NYC)
- Zone 2 (CA, NJ, NY)
- Zone 3 (All Others)
