Experienced Underwriter - Contract Surety

Overview

The organization is seeking a Senior Level Contract Surety Underwriter for the Midwest Region. Proximity to the Chicago office is preferred, but qualified candidates may be located anywhere within the Midwest Region.

This is a customer-focused role designed for a professional with strong ethical standards and a passion for the surety business. The position emphasizes collaboration, practical solutions for brokers and customers, and simple, effective underwriting approaches.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the lead underwriter for an existing, high-quality contract surety client portfolio
• Analyze credit quality and make sound decisions related to terms, conditions, and pricing
• Develop and advance relationships with brokers and agents to pursue new business opportunities
• Review contract, RFP, and bond forms for a wide range of risks, including middle market, subcontract, and national contractors
• Contribute to daily operations and support the development of systems and underwriting practices across the surety organization

Requirements

• Minimum 5 years of underwriting experience within contract surety or a comparable credit or financial-oriented industry
• Financial analysis and credit assessment skills
• Strong negotiation skills
• Ability to travel up to 35% of the time based on business need
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Experience managing and collaborating with retail brokers and agents
• BS/BA degree or equivalent experience

• Base salary range: $120,000.00 to $200,000.00, plus annual bonus eligibility (salary determined by relevant skills and experience)
