Overview
A distinguished public university in California is seeking a Principal Analyst to join its Division of Student Affairs and Success (DSAS). This remote role involves leading strategic financial planning and analysis across a diverse portfolio of departments and programs. The position reports to the Director of Financial Planning and Analysis and serves as a key financial expert and advisor managing multi-source budgets including state funds, student fees, grants, gifts, endowments, and auxiliary income.
Responsibilities
- Conduct complex financial analyses to evaluate past performance and forecast future outcomes, including scenario planning and modeling
- Lead development and maintenance of long-range financial models and strategic business plans
- Prepare detailed analyses for operating, capital, and auxiliary budgets, providing insights and recommendations to senior leadership
- Serve as primary financial advisor for assigned departments, supporting budget development, monitoring, and reallocations
- Coordinate annual budget planning aligned with divisional and institutional goals
- Develop revenue and expenditure projections, monitor compliance, and report on financial performance
- Design and implement internal control procedures to safeguard assets and ensure policy compliance
- Interpret and ensure adherence to university, state, and federal financial policies, providing guidance to managers and staff
- Develop and enhance financial reporting systems, dashboards, and automated tools to support data-driven decision-making
- Collaborate with IT and central offices to improve financial systems functionality and reporting capabilities
- Provide fiscal support for capital projects, major maintenance, and space planning initiatives, including funding models and debt forecasting
- Manage personnel budgets, including salary provisions, reclassifications, and hiring transactions, coordinating with HR as needed
- Participate in special projects, committees, and initiatives supporting divisional strategic priorities
- Mentor and supervise junior staff and analysts, fostering a collaborative and service-oriented team environment
Qualifications
- Advanced degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or related field, or equivalent professional experience
- Proven ability to independently gather, analyze, and interpret complex financial data from multiple sources
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, capable of clearly presenting complex financial information
- Proficiency in advanced spreadsheet and database tools for financial analysis, reporting, and modeling
- Strong interpersonal skills to engage effectively with stakeholders at all organizational levels
- Critical thinking skills with keen attention to detail
- Customer service orientation and collaborative work style
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and manage multiple tasks in a high-volume environment
