Overview
This role involves providing recurring financial reporting and answering questions related to revenue, expenses, budgets, forecasts, and operating performance. The position is entry-level with meaningful analytical responsibility.
Forecasting involves uncertainty, so assumptions should be clearly documented rather than hidden within calculations. You will also present alternative scenarios when a single estimate could create a false sense of precision—particularly when outcomes depend on variables that may change.
A typical analysis may begin with differences between plan and actual performance. You will identify the accounts or operating factors that drove the movement, verify the underlying information, and communicate results with appropriate context.
Responsibilities
- Document model logic, assumptions, and analytical methods so work remains understandable and reusable.
- Compare actual financial results with budgets, forecasts, and prior periods, and explain meaningful variances.
- Reconcile information across schedules or reports and investigate material inconsistencies.
- Build and maintain spreadsheet-based financial models for planning, comparison, and scenario analysis.
- Communicate financial findings in concise business language, including risks, limitations, and areas requiring follow-up.
- Perform trend, sensitivity, and scenario analysis to show how changing assumptions may affect expected results.
- For variance analysis, go beyond stating whether amounts are higher or lower; where information allows, identify operational or financial drivers and explain whether differences appear temporary, recurring, assumption-driven, or in need of further review.
Requirements
- Foundational understanding of financial statements, budgeting, forecasting, and basic accounting principles.
- Interest in financial modeling, scenario analysis, and forward-looking business planning.
- Comfort learning organization-specific reporting definitions, schedules, and planning processes.
- Organized documentation habits and an appreciation for traceable financial analysis.
- Ability to compare results, identify material variances, and explain drivers behind financial changes.
