Overview
This role is a customer-embedded Forward Deployed Accountant / Tax Technologist position focused on turning AI-assisted tax capabilities into production-ready workflows inside accounting firms and finance teams.
You will embed with CPA firms, tax practices, and in-house finance teams to map how work moves through the organization, configure and operationalize AI-powered workflows aligned to real processes, train teams to adopt, and translate recurring field patterns into practical product improvements.
Responsibilities
- Embed with customer teams to map tax and accounting workflows, including process constraints and operational realities (e.g., systems, seasonality, risk).
- Design, pilot, and operationalize AI-powered tax workflows for key activities such as:
- research
- document analysis
- preparation support
- review and memos
- planning
- client delivery
- Lead implementations and change management by:
- running kickoffs
- building rollout plans
- training partners, managers, preparers, and operations staff
- delivering durable playbooks and champions so outcomes scale beyond one engagement
- Diagnose workflow failures in the product context, identify practical workarounds, and stay engaged until the firm can run workflows confidently day to day.
- Partner with sales, success, and product on high-value accounts by:
- supporting complex activations
- proving ROI (time saved, quality lifted, capacity unlocked)
- driving deeper adoption and expansion from strong deployments
- Surface field patterns (recurring prompts, failure modes, edge cases, training gaps, missing capabilities) and provide concrete, reproducible examples to influence product and engineering roadmap decisions.
- Build and maintain the forward-deployed implementation playbook, including templates, evaluations of real tax tasks, onboarding kits, and implementation patterns.
- Travel as needed for customer offices and industry events where in-person presence improves effectiveness, including periodic time at the organization’s San Francisco headquarters.
Requirements
- 3+ years of experience in public accounting, tax (prep, review, planning, consulting, or compliance), firm operations, client accounting services, or a closely related role, ideally within a CPA firm or tax practice.
- Deep fluency in how accounting firms operate, with credibility across stakeholders (e.g., managing partners, tax managers, preparers, and operations leads).
- Proven ability to teach and drive change:
- explain new workflows clearly
- recognize when someone is stuck
- adjust quickly without creating a “behind” dynamic
- Comfort working through details of returns, research memos, document packages, review notes, and busy-season bottlenecks, using judgment to redesign workflows with AI support.
- Strong bias for action in ambiguous environments:
- scope open-ended problems
- ship workable processes quickly
- measure what matters
- iterate with real users and real client work
- Technical fluency with modern AI tools and tax/accounting software—able to configure systems, learn tools quickly, and collaborate with product/engineering (without needing to be a software engineer).
- Clear, concise communication and low-ego collaboration; willingness to pair in person with customers and teammates when helpful.
- Willingness to travel as customer needs require (typically periodic onsite visits and industry events).
Preferred Qualifications
- Active CPA, EA, or progress toward one; MST or strong tax specialization is a plus.
- Experience implementing tax or accounting software (examples include CCH Axcess, Thomson Reuters, Lacerte, UltraTax, Drake, practice-management or document systems).
- Prior experience in tax technology, firm transformation, AI enablement, professional-services implementation, or solutions consulting.
- Early-stage startup experience, or a track record of building the playbook while performing the work.
- Familiarity with how AI copilots, retrieval workflows, and prompt/evaluation loops appear in professional services (building models not required—making them useful in tax work is required).
- Experience leading training programs, change management, or process improvement inside a firm.
