Overview

This hands-on Fractional CFO role supports end-to-end financial operations for a profitable DTC pet brand. The position is fractional and remote, approximately 1–2 days per week (as needed), with ownership of cash flow, monthly close, payments, tax, budgeting, forecasting, and credit facilities that fund growth.

The organization is scaling from $50M+ annual revenue toward $100M+, including expansion via a second brand.

Responsibilities

  • Own financial operations end to end, including:
    • Cash flow management (including maintaining a 13-week cash flow on an ongoing basis)
    • Monthly close oversight with an outside bookkeeper, ensuring books close on time
    • Payments execution and control (contractor pay, supplier and freight invoices, software and card expenses, and affiliate/creator payouts) with timely processing
    • Tax and compliance support, ensuring sales tax and corporate tax filings are correct and on time (in coordination with a CPA)
    • Budgeting and ongoing tracking of fixed costs versus budget
    • Financial controls and audit readiness (two-person approvals, monthly reconciliations)
  • Manage forecasting and reporting for leadership and the CEO:
    • Produce clear projections for cash flow, subscriptions, subscription cohorts, and the cash conversion cycle
    • Identify issues early by flagging items moving against plan the week they appear
    • Provide weekly cash visibility for leadership meetings and deliver a monthly finance report to the CEO
  • Own credit lines and lender relationships:
    • Grow credit limits and lines
    • Set up and manage an inventory- or receivables-backed credit facility, including asset-based lending
    • Ensure funding is available for the next two quarters of purchase orders
  • Strengthen financial structure and automation/controls:
    • Maintain two-person approvals on every payment
    • Ensure every account is reconciled monthly
    • Support entity structure and tax requirements for new entities with the CPA
    • Own AI finance agents and automations that support monthly finance processes
  • Manage currency exposure related to supplier payments (RMB, USD, CAD)

Outcomes (What success looks like)

  • Cash flow, subscriptions, and the cash conversion cycle projected clearly with no surprises (projections vs. actuals; cash never below the minimum balance)
  • Books closed accurately and on time every month (no corrections needed after the P&L review with the CEO)
  • Contractor pay, bills, and payouts paid right and on time
  • Fixed costs staying within budget (monthly fixed costs vs. budget)
  • Credit and capital in place to fund growth (credit available vs. cash needed for the next two quarters of purchase orders)
  • Money controlled and books audit-ready (second approval for every payment; all accounts reconciled monthly)

Required Qualifications

  • Finance leadership experience: CFO or VP of Finance for at least one DTC ecommerce brand doing $30M+ a year
  • Hands-on execution:
    • Experience running 13-week cash flows
    • Experience managing monthly closes with a bookkeeper
    • Experience personally running contractor and supplier payments
  • Ecommerce finance depth:
    • Reconciled Shopify and Amazon payouts
    • Understand nCPA, MER, LTV, COGS, and inventory cash cycles
  • Forecasting capability:
    • Build cash flow, subscription cohort, and cash conversion cycle projections that hold up against actuals
  • Capital & lenders:
    • Set up or managed an inventory- or receivables-backed credit facility
    • Keep lenders confident with clean reporting
  • Tax and controls:
    • Sales tax experience alongside a CPA
    • Run a clean payment process with approvals and reconciliations
  • Detail orientation and reliability:
    • Ability to catch wrong amounts, duplicate payments, and missed filings before money moves
    • Discretion and trust with contractor pay, bank access, and owner finances
  • Availability:
    • Responsive when cash or payment issues come up, even outside scheduled days
  • Communication:
    • Fluent in English

  • Cross-border experience (e.g., US and Hong Kong)
