Overview
This role involves managing wage garnishment payments to ensure accuracy and timeliness for employees of the organization's customers. The Garnishment Specialist I is responsible for overseeing process automation related to garnishments and resolving any automation failures. The position requires adherence to service level deadlines, multitasking, legal order analysis, and efficient, accurate work. Occasional telephone communication with garnishment agencies is expected. Strong attention to detail and analytical skills are essential.
Responsibilities
- Review and set up all garnishment orders, including preparing orders and correspondence for scanning.
- Maintain garnishment rules in the payroll system by researching and testing with senior payroll systems support to ensure proper withholding according to state rules and garnishment types.
- Write, review, and process reports to automate answer letters and interrogatory responses.
- Maintain garnishment screens by entering applicable start and stop dates for each order promptly, based on order information and deadlines.
- Respond to and resolve payroll and garnishment inquiries, providing accurate information to courts, agencies, and employees in a timely manner.
- Collaborate with various internal departments and external contacts such as check collection agencies, courts, and lawyers to address questions and resolve issues.
- Process lump sum payments, coordinating with agencies to determine withholding amounts for quarterly and annual bonuses and other lump sum payments.
- Participate in special projects including account reconciliations, accruals, journal entries, and cross-training with team members.

Requirements
- General knowledge of payroll functions and processing, including bookkeeping, payroll tax, fringe benefits, and garnishments
