Government Mortgage Underwriter (Texas) – FHA DE / VA SAR/LAPP
This role supports government loan underwriting in Texas, with a focus on FHA and VA products. The employer is seeking an experienced FHA Underwriter and VA Underwriter with active FHA Direct Endorsement (DE) and VA SAR/LAPP designations, along with recent experience underwriting Texas mortgage loans.
Responsibilities
- Underwrite FHA and VA mortgage loans using active FHA DE and VA SAR/LAPP designations.
- Underwrite Conventional, USDA, Bond, and other residential mortgage loan products.
- Complete 45+ initial mortgage underwrites per month, including credit, income, asset, collateral, and appraisal reviews.
- Underwrite manual mortgage loans and evaluate compensating factors.
- Communicate loan status, underwriting decisions, and conditions with Loan Officers and Processors using current technology.
- Review and re-underwrite files as conditions are satisfied and additional documentation is received.
- Maintain current knowledge of FHA, VA, Conventional, USDA, Bond, and investor underwriting guidelines.
- Support underwriting quality, consistency, and credit policy execution within the team.
- Maintain accurate conversation logs and loan documentation in Byte to ensure proper file progression.
- Assist with training and mentoring of other mortgage team members as needed.
- Complete ad hoc reporting.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Minimum of five (5) years of Government Mortgage Underwriting experience with FHA and VA loans.
- Recent experience underwriting Texas mortgage loans is required.
- Active FHA Direct Endorsement (DE) designation required.
- Active VA SAR/LAPP designation preferred (both designations strongly preferred).
- Experience underwriting Conventional, USDA, and Bond loans.
- Strong knowledge of Desktop Underwriter (DU) and Loan Product Advisor (LP), including interpreting findings, documenting loan decisions, and communicating underwriting requirements.
- Experience underwriting manual loans.
- Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and email systems.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume mortgage lending environment.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills.

Compensation & Benefits
- Base compensation is provided for candidates in geographic regions that do not currently require base wage disclosure, excluding residents of California (CA), Colorado (CO), and New York (NY).
- Competitive base salary, bonus opportunities, and overtime as applicable.
- Compensation is based on factors including government underwriting experience, FHA DE and VA SAR/LAPP designations, mortgage industry expertise, technical skills, experience working with mortgage lenders, education, and overall qualifications.
