Overview
This role involves serving as an Incentives Tax Manager within a Professional Services team, leading end-to-end R&D tax credit engagements. The position includes managing a portfolio of clients, utilizing a technology platform designed for R&D Tax Credit documentation, and delivering high-quality, audit-ready technical support.
Beyond the primary focus on Section 41 R&D tax credits, the role also includes supporting or leading related incentive engagements such as 179D, 45L, IC-DISC, Section 174 capitalization/amortization, and cost segregation/fixed asset depreciation. The goal is to help clients maximize total tax benefits while maintaining consistent, defensible, and scalable documentation.
Responsibilities
Primary (R&D Tax Credit Focus)
- Manage federal and state R&D tax credit claims in collaboration with the Practice Leader and cross-functional teams.
- Lead and participate in client interviews to identify qualifying activities and expenses.
- Oversee project execution including status updates, timelines, technical issue identification, and deliverable management.
- Collect, format, and analyze large datasets to build complex calculation models supporting credit positions.
- Draft and review technical memoranda such as opinion letters, IRS responses, and ruling requests to support audit readiness.
- Mentor, train, and supervise junior team members to ensure consistent quality and adherence to best practices.
Additional Incentives and Depreciation
- Lead or support 179D deduction studies and 45L credit engagements, including eligibility assessment, substantiation, and preparation of client-ready deliverables.
- Support IC-DISC feasibility studies, implementation, and annual calculation/compliance deliverables.
- Assist clients with Section 174 capitalization/amortization modeling and documentation.
- Manage and coordinate cost segregation and fixed asset/depreciation reviews, including placed-in-service dates, class lives, methods, bonus depreciation considerations, and reconciliation support.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Economics, Finance, Engineering, or a related field.
- CPA or JD credentials are a plus.
- Minimum of 4 years of hands-on R&D Tax Credit experience involving client interaction and engagement management; audit experience is advantageous.
- Strong analytical, research, organizational, and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects under deadlines.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for client stakeholders.
- Demonstrated leadership experience including training, supervising, and reviewing work for quality.
Preferred Qualifications
- Practical experience with 179D, 45L, IC-DISC, Section 174 amortization, and/or cost segregation, fixed assets, and depreciation.
