Overview
An international mining exploration organization is seeking an experienced International Tax Senior Manager to join its Global Tax and Finance Team. This role involves developing and executing tax planning strategies and maintaining global tax compliance across multiple jurisdictions in a dynamic mining environment. The position is remote and reports to the Associate Director of Tax.
Responsibilities
- Manage international direct tax compliance for multiple jurisdictions including Canada, the Nordic Region, UK, Europe, Australia, and serve as primary liaison with external advisors; support compliance efforts in Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
- Strategize, research, and plan for tax implications of global operations, coordinating U.S. and foreign tax laws to develop optimal tax planning strategies.
- Support corporate restructurings, entity reorganizations, and capitalization strategies by analyzing tax implications, modeling scenarios, and coordinating with Legal, Finance, and external advisors to implement tax-efficient structures.
- Develop and maintain tax systems leveraging AI to support strategic decision-making, including cash tax forecasting, scenario analysis, capital structure optimization, thin capitalization monitoring, and evaluation of tax implications for corporate transactions and operational initiatives.
- Provide technical expertise and operational support for indirect taxes (VAT, withholding taxes, sales/use taxes, customs duties) across key jurisdictions; partner with local finance teams to resolve complex issues, ensure timely compliance, and identify optimization opportunities.
- Collaborate with Procurement, Supply Chain, Technology, Operations, Finance, and Legal teams on tax and customs implications of business decisions.
- Support legal entity structuring for new operations and business expansion in partnership with non-tax departments and leadership.
- Research and identify tax planning opportunities including incentives, credits, duty relief programs, and treaty benefits; assist with mining tax credit and SR&ED calculations in Canada, taking ownership from research through execution.
- Assist with tax audits and controversy matters by coordinating responses and developing technical positions.
- Build scalable processes and documentation as the company transitions from exploration to production.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 8 years of tax experience, preferably including public accounting, law firm, and/or in-house roles.
- CPA, JD, and LLM (Tax) or equivalent preferred.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. and international tax regimes.
- Advanced proficiency in Excel and experience with AI applications.
- Strong organizational skills; proactive communicator and collaborator.
- Ability to work effectively across cultures and collaborate with international teams.
- Intellectual curiosity and eagerness to learn about mineral exploration, particularly geology; willingness to work directly with geologists in the field.
- Ability to explain technical tax issues to non-tax domain experts and collaborate on solutions.
- Comfortable working in a fast-growing, early-stage company with a dynamic work environment and evolving responsibilities.
- Interest in aligning technical product development with business objectives.
- Valid passport and willingness to travel to exploration sites globally (typically 3-5 trips per year).
- High degree of independence and ability to work with limited supervision.
- Eagerness to take on diverse tasks as needed.
Compensation & Benefits
- US base salary range: $160,000 - $200,000 per year.
