Overview
This role involves running day-to-day finance for Indigenous governments, organizations, and businesses, serving as a fractional controller across a portfolio of clients. You will lead a disciplined month-end close, manage timely funder reporting, and produce year-end audit-ready files. Some clients will rely on you to keep operations running smoothly month to month, while others will need backlog cleanup and audit preparation.
Responsibilities
- Lead month-end and year-end close across your portfolio, including reconciliations, accruals, deferred revenue, capital assets, and journal entries—on time and review-ready.
- Oversee AP, AR, payroll, and cash management processes, stepping in hands-on as needed.
- Prepare year-end audit files and lead schedules, ensure complete and organized support, clear PBC lists, and coordinate with external auditors.
- Clean up backlogs and prior-year issues to move clients from catch-up mode to a clean, audit-ready position.
- Maintain accurate books across multi-entity groups, including Nations’ governments, economic development corporations, limited partnerships, trusts, and societies, with intercompany and fund accounting.
- Track funding by program, manage deferred and restricted funds, and prepare reporting for ISC, CIRNAC, FNHA, and other funders.
- Design practical processes, internal controls, and financial policies that hold up to auditor and funder scrutiny.
- Coach and review the work of accountants, bookkeepers, and CPA students; build checklists and templates that scale across clients.
Requirements
- CPA designation required.
- Significant experience in controllership, month-end close, and year-end audit preparation; ideally with Indigenous governments, organizations, or not-for-profits.
- Strong working knowledge of PSAS / ASNPO, fund accounting, and funding agreement reporting.
- Experience leading engagements and supervising staff.
- A respectful, relationship-based approach, with an understanding of Indigenous histories, governance, and the impacts of colonization.
- After base experience requirements are met: strong analytical thinking and problem-solving.
Preferred Qualifications
- Audit experience at a firm serving First Nations or public-sector clients.
- Cloud accounting and payroll systems experience (e.g., QuickBooks Online, Sage, Xero).
