Overview
This role provides fractional accounting and finance leadership for a portfolio of early-stage consumer brands. You will own month-end close and reporting, manage accounting teams across multiple client engagements, and build the financial infrastructure founders need to scale.
Responsibilities
- Own the full month-end close, including revenue, expenses, GL reconciliations, accruals, and financial statements—on time, every month
- Manage a team of domestic and international accountants across the client portfolio
- Maintain US GAAP compliance and accrual-basis accounting
- Oversee billing, AP/AR, inventory costing, and revenue recognition for each client
- Manage inventory accounting, including costing (in partnership with client teams), write-offs, and landed cost treatment
- Handle trade spend and promotional accounting, including accruals, chargebacks, deduction management, and retailer compliance
- Build and maintain COGS models that reflect how product brands operate
- Support cash flow forecasting for inventory-heavy businesses, where timing is critical
- Translate financial information for founders who are experts in product, not their P&L
- Evaluate and implement financial tools appropriate to each client’s stage (e.g., QBO, NetSuite, Xero, Bill.com, Shopify)
- Build and document processes that don’t exist yet and can scale
- Foster internal controls that add real protection without adding bureaucracy that slows execution
- Manage multiple client engagements without dropping deliverables; communicate capacity constraints honestly
Requirements (Required)
- Deep CPG accounting experience, including inventory, COGS, trade spend, deductions, and promotional accounting
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally across multiple clients or companies
- Strong command of US GAAP (including revenue recognition and inventory valuation)
- Proficiency with QBO, NetSuite, and Xero, plus startup tool stack experience (Bill.com, Gusto, Shopify)
- Bachelor’s degree in business or accounting
- CPA preferred and valued
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with early-stage founders and managing ambiguity in infrastructure-light environments
- Ability to bring order to ambiguous situations without judgment
- Ability to hold the line on what matters and let go of what doesn’t
- Curiosity about client brands, their customers, and how financials connect to product operations
