Overview
This role involves using catastrophe models to assess and quantify risk and profitability for a Property Cat reinsurance portfolio. You will support the reinsurance placement and renewal process and partner with the actuarial pricing team to provide insights that inform underwriting and management decisions.
Responsibilities
- Treaty analysis: Analyze and model complex reinsurance treaties (e.g., proportional, non-proportional, retrocessional) using industry-standard catastrophe models (e.g., Verisk Touchstone/Touchstone Re, RMS RiskLink, CoreLogic).
- Data preparation & validation: Prepare, validate, and quality-assure exposure data used as inputs to catastrophe models, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Model execution & interpretation: Run catastrophe models, interpret outputs (e.g., exceedance probability curves, average annual loss, return periods), and identify key risk drivers.
- Portfolio management support: Provide risk assessments and insights to underwriters to support management of the reinsurance portfolio.
- Scenario development: Develop and analyze custom scenarios to assess potential impacts of specific events or changes in exposure.
- Model validation & development: Participate in validating and enhancing catastrophe models, including model parameterization and calibration.
- Reporting & communication: Prepare clear, concise reports summarizing model results and communicate findings to underwriters, management, and other stakeholders.
- Cross-functional collaboration: Collaborate with underwriters, actuaries, and other departments to deliver comprehensive risk assessments.
- Research & development: Stay current on industry trends, new modeling techniques, and emerging risks; participate in projects shaping the organization’s view of risk for natural catastrophe perils.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a quantitative field such as Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in catastrophe modeling, specifically within the reinsurance industry.
- Proficiency using at least one major catastrophe modeling platform (Verisk Touchstone, RMS RiskLink, CoreLogic RQE).
- Strong understanding of reinsurance principles, treaty structures, and underwriting practices.
- Solid understanding of statistical concepts, including probability distributions, return periods, and extreme value theory.
- Experience manipulating and analyzing data using SQL, R, or Python.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills (written and verbal).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with stochastic modeling tools such as MetaRisk or ReMetrica.
- Experience with scripting or programming languages (e.g., Python, VBA).
- Experience with database management.
