Overview

This role owns operating expense accounting for the organization. Responsibilities include assessing and recording monthly accruals, maintaining the cash feed to ensure transactions are accurately captured, and overseeing budget vs. actuals, T&E, vendor bill payments, and corporate card programs.

The position supports department leaders with clear insight into spending and remaining budget, and ensures vendors and employees are paid accurately and on time. This is a hands-on role with significant ownership, cross-functional visibility, and opportunities to improve processes as the organization grows.

Responsibilities

  • Own budget vs. actuals reporting, partnering with department leads to explain variances and keep them informed of spend.
  • Manage the full operating expense cycle, including:
    • Vendor bill payments (AP)
    • Corporate card program
    • Employee travel & expense reimbursements
  • Prepare journal entries, accruals, and balance sheet reconciliations for opex accounts as part of month-end close, consistent with GAAP.
  • Assist with federal and state reporting requirements and tax filings, including corporate tax returns, sales tax registrations and filings, and 1099s.
  • Partner with department heads to improve how they track and forecast their own budgets—building the process, not just running it.
  • Identify and drive automation and process improvements across AP, T&E, and close using tools such as Ramp, Navan, and Rillet.
  • Support ad hoc requests and projects, including system automations, process improvements, and research on technical accounting topics.

Requirements

Must-haves

  • 3+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally at a fast-growing software or tech startup.
  • Hands-on ownership of AP, corporate card programs, and/or T&E processes (not solely a supporting role).
  • Experience with modern finance tools such as Ramp, Stripe, and Navan.
  • Strong Excel/spreadsheet skills, including building and maintaining budget vs. actuals models.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.

Nice-to-haves

  • CPA or actively working toward a CPA.
  • Experience with Rillet.
  • Familiarity with BI tools like Looker.
