Overview
This role is part of the Finance department and is based in the United States (remote).
The organization is seeking a Senior Accountant to own the multi-state sales tax function, support the monthly close process, and serve as the primary backup to the Treasury lead. This is a hands-on position with real ownership of a specific function while remaining broadly involved across close and treasury.
Reporting will initially be to the CFO as the role is established, with expectations to shift to the Controller once the sales tax function is up and running.
Responsibilities
- Lead the multi-state sales tax initiative, including:
- Nexus analysis
- Registration
- Filing cadence
- Ongoing compliance across all states where obligations exist
- Manage the relationship with an outsourced sales tax filing provider and ensure filing accuracy before submission
- Research and document taxability positions for new products and when expanding into new states
- Support monthly close activities, including:
- Journal entries
- Account reconciliations
- Flux analysis for assigned areas
- Serve as second-in-command for Treasury:
- Bank reconciliations
- Cash positioning
- Daily liquidity monitoring
- Full ownership during the Treasury lead’s absence
- Assist with quarterly and annual audit requests related to sales tax and treasury
- Coordinate with outside accountants on corporate and state income tax filings by providing required schedules and supporting detail
- Support VAT compliance and filings for applicable entities
- Manage intercompany transactions and reconciliations across entities
- Support transfer pricing documentation and calculations in coordination with outside advisors
- Identify and help implement process improvements and automation opportunities across sales tax and cash workflows
Requirements
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including hands-on multi-state sales tax work
- Solid month-end close experience, including reconciliations, journal entries, and flux analysis
- Treasury or cash management exposure (bank reconciliations, cash positioning) is a strong plus
- Exposure to corporate or state income tax (working alongside outside accountants or a tax firm) is a plus
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- CPA or progress toward CPA is a plus
- Ability to work independently in a lean, fast-moving finance team
- Strong Excel skills
- Working knowledge of Sage (ERP) and Avalara (sales tax) required
- Clear, organized communication skills, including the ability to explain tax positions to non-tax stakeholders
